Hungary's National Consumer Protection Authority Investigates Textile Composition in Children's Clothing

Laboratory tests are underway to verify the material composition of infant and children's apparel labeled as '100% cotton.'
The National Consumer Protection Authority (NKFH) in Hungary is conducting laboratory tests on infant and children’s clothing, particularly examining the fiber composition of textile products.

The aim is to determine whether items labeled as '100% cotton' actually meet the material specifications indicated on their tags.

Should the tests reveal discrepancies, regulatory actions will be initiated to protect Hungarian families from misleading products.

Accurate labeling of household textiles and clothing is critical for consumers, as fiber composition significantly influences purchasing decisions.

Misleading information constitutes unfair commercial practices that infringe consumer rights, as emphasized in NKFH communications.

There are instances where the actual material make-up of a product does not align with the labeled information.

In previous analyses, the NKFH evaluated children’s pajamas, finding discrepancies in 40 of the examined products:
- In 4 cases, what was labeled as 100% cotton was actually 100% polyester.

- In 6 instances, the actual composition comprised 40-60% polyester.

These tests are conducted by the NKFH’s accredited Food and Chemical Industry Laboratory in accordance with relevant European Union regulations, which state that textile products can only be marketed if their labeling and marking comply with legal requirements.

The NKFH specifically ensures that '100% cotton' labels appear only on products containing a single fiber.

In the textile industry, it is common practice to blend cotton with polyester or polyamide to enhance product durability and manageability.

EU regulations permit minimal deviations in fiber content; a maximum variance of up to 2% of foreign fiber is acceptable if it is deemed unavoidable due to manufacturing processes and is not a result of intentional mixing.

The authority advises consumers to carefully evaluate the fiber composition of textile products and report any suspicious discrepancies to the NKFH or the relevant government office.

Dr. Lilla Német-Weingartner, president of the NKFH, noted that the investigations will cover not only garments for infants and young children but also children’s clothing and sportswear, as well as adult shirts and t-shirts.

The authority is expected to compile the results of these investigations and take necessary actions to ensure consumer protection.

The NKFH and government offices are committed to safeguarding consumer rights and will take decisive action against any violations of regulations in the future.
