Hungary's Interior Ministry Denounces Unfounded Claims by Medical Association

The Interior Ministry asserts inaccuracies in the Hungarian Medical Chamber's statements on healthcare.
The Hungarian Interior Ministry issued a statement on Sunday condemning the Hungarian Medical Chamber (Magyar Orvosi Kamara or MOK) for spreading what it called false claims that undermine public trust in the healthcare system.

According to the ministry, these claims are being indiscriminately adopted by politicians from the Democratic Coalition and Tisza Party, as well as certain media outlets.

The ministry refuted MOK's assertion that hospital debts prevent doctors from providing patient care, stating that all patients in Hungary receive necessary medical treatment regardless of financial constraints.

The ministry emphasized that there are no financial obstacles affecting surgical procedures and highlighted unused funds allocated for reducing waiting lists as evidence of available resources.

Additionally, the ministry reported unprecedented government investment in healthcare, with this year's budget allocating 3,717 billion forints to health objectives, which is 2,519 billion forints more than the last budget proposed by the previous left-wing government.

Last year, the government also facilitated hospital debt management by providing approximately 144 billion forints over three occasions.

The Interior Ministry addressed MOK's alleged inaccuracies regarding healthcare financing, noting that the Chamber does not account for financial compensation granted to healthcare providers, representing over half of personnel-related funding.

It also mentioned overlooked operational cost funding provided through the Central Procurement and Supply Directorate's budget.

Efforts to realign the financing of healthcare services to reflect their real value have begun, with the ministry starting a data collection initiative on institutional expenditures.

The current year's budget includes 150 billion forints in additional funding toward this aim.

Regarding complaints that the sector leadership does not openly discuss healthcare issues, the ministry claimed transparency and participation in professional forums, focused on identifying and resolving healthcare challenges.

A sophisticated multi-step selection process for healthcare leadership has been implemented to appoint competent individuals capable of managing their institutions effectively, with five appointments recently made under this system by Interior Minister Sándor Pintér.

The ministry encouraged MOK to immediately report any known misconduct or irregularities, specifying concrete details for timely intervention.

It accused the Chamber of making vague, generalized critiques without specifics, interpreting this as political agitation.

In conclusion, the Interior Ministry called on the Hungarian Medical Chamber to cease activities that might undermine public confidence in secure patient care and urged it to return to its professional organizational duties.
