Hungary Reports Increased Retail Sales Amid Economic Adjustments

Retail turnover rises 4% in the first two months of the year, reflecting enhanced consumer confidence.
In Hungary, retail sales volume increased by 4% in the first two months of this year, signaling a notable rise in consumer confidence.

Households are increasingly confident in their financial planning, which is positively influencing not only retail transactions but also stimulating tourism.

This upward trend is primarily supported by high employment rates and a continuous increase in real wages, having risen for 17 consecutive months.

According to adjusted data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, retail sales volume rose by 3.3% in February year-on-year, although it showed a slight decrease of 0.6% compared to the previous month.

Specific sectors have experienced varied growth rates: sales in food and food-related mixed stores grew by 3.5%, non-food retail by 5.0%, and fuel retail by 0.4%.

The government aims to further strengthen the financial security of Hungarian families by launching the largest tax reduction program in Europe, alongside combating price increases.

Key initiatives include tax exemptions on childcare benefits, introducing lifetime personal income tax exemptions for mothers with two or three children, and plans to double family tax allowances in two phases.

To protect families and pensioners from undue price hikes, the government has implemented measures to reduce retail markups.

This initiative has led to a significant price reduction of over 18% on affected products.

The government will continue to monitor food prices to ensure compliance with regulations, with the National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority conducting regular inspections to ensure that retail chains adhere to price controls, enabling consumers to access better-priced products.

The rise in disposable incomes and improved retail prices may contribute to ongoing increases in consumption in the coming months, a trend corroborated by preliminary data from online cash registers.

Additionally, there is a focus on rural shops as vital components of daily supply within local communities.

A new support program will provide grants of up to 3 million Hungarian Forints as non-repayable, 100% pre-financed assistance to small shops selling essential food items and daily consumer goods in settlements with populations under 5,000.

This initiative aims to strengthen the survival of rural businesses and help maintain the availability of essential products in local markets.
