Hungary Implements Price Cap on Essential Foods to Reduce Grocery Costs

Hungary Implements Price Cap on Essential Foods to Reduce Grocery Costs

New regulations aim to decrease prices of 30 basic food items, providing relief for families ahead of the weekend.
Beginning on Monday, Hungary will implement a price cap on 30 essential food items, significantly reducing grocery costs for consumers.

According to calculations, these new price regulations will lead to considerable savings for families, particularly in their Sunday meal preparations.

Recent data revealed that retailers currently operate with an average profit margin of 68% on milk.

As the government mandates a reduction to a 10% profit margin, the price of milk is expected to decrease by more than a third, specifically by approximately 34.5%.

For chicken wings, which are subject to a 42.5% margin, the price will drop nearly 23%.

Furthermore, the price of butter, currently subject to a 136% profit margin, will fall to less than half, estimated at a reduction of 53.4% when the margin is adjusted to 10%.

In addition, sour cream, which has a profit margin of 226%, is projected to decline significantly, with anticipated reductions exceeding 66% when the new cap is applied.

Considering these decreases, calculations have been made for the cost of a Sunday meal for a family of four consisting of chicken soup, breaded chicken with mashed potatoes, and cucumber salad.

Based on prices recorded on Thursday at a Spar supermarket located at Pacsirtamező Street 49 in District III, the total cost of such a meal would have been nearly 9,600 HUF.

This amount may vary somewhat based on the specific store or chain.

With the impending price reductions, the same Sunday meal could be prepared for approximately 7,670 HUF next week, representing a decrease of 1,895 HUF or about 20%.

These calculations do not take into account potential reductions in other meal components expected to occur, providing only a rough estimate.

Nonetheless, they serve to illustrate the anticipated decrease in costs for essential food items affected by the price cap.

To ensure compliance with these price controls, strict oversight will be implemented.

The National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority is tasked with monitoring adherence to the new regulations.

Additionally, the Competition Authority will support public awareness efforts through an online price monitoring system.

This system will allow users access to the current daily price, historical price data, and loyalty program prices.

Retailers are required to upload these details into the system by the end of the preceding day.
