Hungary's Prime Minister, Orbán Viktor, announced the establishment of an Operational Team for Drought Protection in a video posted on social media.

The team aims to address the challenges posed by this year's expected drought, despite current rainfall in parts of the country.

According to government analyses, Hungary is projected to face another dry year, a recurring issue characterized by cycles of drought, flooding, and standing water.

In his announcement, Orbán emphasized the importance of mobilizing available resources to mitigate the consequences of drought and reduce damage this growing season.

He called on farmers to cooperate with the operational team to ensure a successful agricultural year, noting the shared interests of the government and the farming community.

Reports from specific regions, such as near Szentes, indicate severe groundwater shortages forcing farmers to sow seeds directly into dry soil.

Agricultural specialists highlight that they are beginning their growing season with the fourth consecutive year of drought conditions.

While some areas have attempted irrigation, logistical constraints limit its application across entire fields due to high-voltage power lines running through them.

Thus far in 2025, the region has received only 70 to 80 millimeters of rainfall, with wind quickly evaporating any moisture.

Experts indicate that at least 100 millimeters of precipitation is lacking around Szeged, exacerbating the situation.

The last time the Hungarian government created an operational team to deal with an extraordinary drought situation was in 2022. During that intervention, Agriculture Minister István Nagy noted that nearly half of Europe was suffering from a lack of precipitation, warning of historical dryness conditions for Hungary.

The operational team's first meeting took place in the Carmelite Monastery, situated in Budapest, reflecting the government's ongoing commitment to addressing agricultural challenges in light of changing climate conditions.
