Hungarian Tourism Sector Set for Growth with Increased Focus on Domestic Travel

Tourism in Hungary contributes nearly 13% to GDP, with expectations for significant visitor influx and strategic shifts in initiatives leading up to 2025.
The Hungarian tourism sector is poised for a substantial boost this year, as it currently accounts for nearly 13% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has projected an exceptional year for 2025, contingent on stronger economic growth driven in part by the tourism industry.

Olivér Csendes, CEO of Visit Hungary, noted at a Budapest Chamber of Commerce and Industry event titled "The Future of Tourism," that the sector's contribution to GDP could reach as high as 14.2% this year.

Last year marked a record for tourism in Hungary, with approximately 18 million tourists visiting local accommodations, surpassing the 2023 guest numbers by almost 11%.

The total number of guest nights reached a new high of over 44 million, reflecting nearly 6% growth from previous years.

Csendes emphasized the appeal of Hungarian accommodations to both international and domestic travelers, highlighting Budapest's achievement as a leader in tourism growth.

Plans for 2025 include encouraging more domestic travel among Hungarians to explore the country's diverse landscapes and friendly hospitality.

Data has identified key gastronomic attractions favored by tourists, including the Central Market Hall on Fővám Square, Szimpla Sunday Farmer's Market, Bolyki Winery in Eger, and Nádas Winery in Etyek.

The nightlife scene features popular venues like Gozsdu Courtyard, Las Vegas, and Tropicana casinos.

According to Csendes, outdoor activities, particularly during sunny weather, are especially appreciated by British visitors.

Notable positive experiences in Budapest include riverboat cruises and programs associated with Margaret Island.

There is an optimistic projection for further growth in the tourism sector, with expectations to attract an additional 1.3 million guests to Hungarian accommodations this year, potentially benefiting around 400,000 families.

The CEO highlighted a strategic approach aimed at enhancing quality over quantity, indicating a shift in focus from simply increasing visitor numbers to increasing the number of guest nights and per capita spending.

Collaborations with the international airport aim to optimize the consumer experience and effectively promote travel to Budapest and Debrecen.

Csendes acknowledged the industry's challenges, stating that while revenues are finite, targeted strategies remain essential for success.

Specific markets have been identified for focused campaigns, with professional promotional activities directed primarily at these targeted regions.

Emphasizing collaboration within the industry, Csendes noted that workshops and initiatives are in place to assist key stakeholders in the sector.

He emphasized that successful tourism experiences are best conveyed by those who have genuinely lived them.

This year, Hungary is set to host numerous international concerts, including performances by Imagine Dragons, Guns N' Roses, and Katy Perry.

Additionally, a two-day international tourism conference will take place on October 12–13 at the Whale, focusing on adapting to evolving technology and consumer needs in tourism.

A significant initiative includes the establishment of a MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) fund, which will provide annual support of 400 million HUF for 20 medium to large-sized event organizers, primarily to boost business tourism.

Csendes also noted that increasing Budapest's visibility in the business tourism sector is critical, with Vienna’s practices being monitored as a benchmark.

Csendes concluded by reiterating that the sector's success hinges on collaboration among professionals, reinforcing that working together drives the Hungarian economy forward.
