Hungarian Minister Warns Strabag of Potential Ban Amidst M30 Highway Repairs

Hungarian Minister Warns Strabag of Potential Ban Amidst M30 Highway Repairs

Lázár János emphasizes urgent repairs required on the M30 motorway, with costs expected to reach 5 billion HUF, stating Strabag must bear the expenses under warranty.
Hungary's Minister of Construction and Transport, Lázár János, announced on a recent community forum in Szikszó that repairs to the M30 motorway must be completed by the end of October.

The minister specified that the costs, estimated to reach 5 billion Hungarian forints (approximately €13 million), must be covered entirely by Strabag as a guarantee repair.

János confirmed that the government intends to enforce this warranty.

As of recent days, Strabag has reportedly commenced the necessary work.

The section of the M30 motorway was closed by the operating company, Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt., on February 17 last year due to multiple displacements of the roadway structure and cracking of the pavement.

Lázár stated that experts from Budapest University of Technology and Economics were called in to assist in identifying the cause of the damage, as there were doubts regarding Strabag's explanation about the issue.

During the forum, János articulated concerns regarding the accountability of the contractor, asserting that independent expert assessments were necessary to avoid prolonged legal disputes between the designer and the contractor.

In his statements, János accused Strabag of attempting to reduce costs at the expense of quality leading to structural failures, stating, "The contractor wanted to earn more from less money, which resulted in a technical fault.

This is a significant error.

They have let everyone down, but we will not allow them to escape responsibility." He highlighted the absence of Strabag representatives at the forum, clarifying that confidentiality obligations prevented them from attending.

Strabag had indicated a desire to participate but was restricted from doing so due to the potential legal implications of sensitive information being disclosed.

János noted that Strabag had previously indicated a willingness to take legal action if they were required to perform warranty repairs, underscoring the contentious nature of the ongoing negotiations.

He reiterated that Strabag was responsible for the contractor's plan and that there was little room for discussion regarding accountability.

The minister further warned of potential repercussions for Strabag in the Hungarian market should they fail to comply with the requirements for the M30 repairs.

This statement underlines the growing tensions between the Hungarian government and the construction company regarding the management and execution of infrastructure projects in the country.
