Hungarian Government Offices Brace for Increased Demand as Citizens Rush for Digital Citizenship Registration

Hungarian Government Offices Brace for Increased Demand as Citizens Rush for Digital Citizenship Registration

The approaching deadline for the Digital Citizenship program and Ügyfélkapu+ has led to a surge in customer visits to government service centers.
As the deadline looms for registering in Hungary's Digital Citizenship program or the Ügyfélkapu+ system, government service centers, known as kormányablakok, are experiencing a notable uptick in customer visits.

With just days remaining before the transition to the new digital identification systems, the demand for in-person assistance has risen sharply.

Beginning next Wednesday, online transactions on state-managed websites and apps in Hungary will require either the Digital Citizen mobile application or two-factor authentication via Ügyfélkapu+, pushing citizens to urgent action.

In response, the Ministry of Public Administration and Territorial Development has increased the capacity at kormányablakok to handle the influx.

To facilitate a smooth and swift registration process, the Ministry advises citizens to download the Digital Citizen mobile app in advance.

For those opting for Ügyfélkapu+, current account holders can register for the enhanced security feature from home, bypassing the need to visit service centers.

Data from government offices suggests many are postponing registration for the Digital Citizenship initiative until the last minute.

Previously, the busiest day last year saw 85,000 visitors to these helpdesks.

In contrast, since early January, daily figures have regularly surpassed 100,000, with a peak of 114,000 on January 6th.

About 25% of visitors are seeking registration for the Digital Citizenship program.

The Ministry encourages individuals to consult the official Digital Citizenship Program website or government office web pages for instructions on the registration process and to ensure the app is downloaded beforehand to expedite service.

While registrations for both Ügyfélkapu+ and the Digital Citizenship program can still be conducted post-January 15th, service centers are gearing up for increased activity in the final days leading to the deadline.

Customers should anticipate potential wait times and can monitor service center loads through the Kormányablak mobile application, which also offers a remote ticketing feature.
