The Hungarian Central Bank (MNB) is facing increasing scrutiny following the publication of three reports by the State Audit Office (ÁSZ) in mid-March, which detail various aspects of the bank's financial practices.

These reports, totaling over 600 pages, focus on the management of the Pallas Athéné Domus Meriti Foundation, investments made by the Neumann János University Foundation, and the operational compliance of the MNB itself, including costs associated with the renovation of its headquarters.

Of particular concern is the report concerning the Pallas Athéné Domus Meriti Foundation (PADME), which has drawn significant attention due to longstanding issues regarding the management of funds associated with the MNB's foundations.

Prior to the official release of the audit report, an investigative outlet disclosed that the audit office had identified serious deficiencies and financial mismanagement resulting in substantial losses to assets worth hundreds of billions of HUF belonging to the bank's foundations.

The ASZ reported that approximately 200 billion HUF has gone missing, reportedly linked to numerous issues in property transactions.

This raises concerns about the whereabouts of these public funds, with speculation that they might have been allocated to foreign properties and art collections.

Compounding the situation, the police have initiated an investigation for breach of fiduciary duty, prompted by the findings of the ASZ.
