Health Authorities Shut Down Two Chinese Buffets in Budapest Following Food Poisoning Reports

Several patrons fell ill after dining at establishments on Alkotás Street, prompting swift action from consumer protection officials.
Two Chinese buffets located on Alkotás Street in Budapest were temporarily closed by health authorities after multiple reports of patrons suffering from food poisoning.

The closures took effect immediately after inspections revealed severe hygiene violations.

Despite the shutdown, the owner reopened both restaurants within hours, raising concerns among local officials.

The inspections indicated that the kitchens of both establishments were in a state of disrepair, with rotten windows and openings obstructed by accumulated grease and dirt, leaving them unable to close properly.

Cooked meats were reportedly stored in areas that lacked adequate sanitation.

The restaurants, situated directly across from a southern railway station and a few buildings apart, were described as being significantly affected by neglect.

One establishment's faded signage indicated a lack of maintenance, while soiled white curtains failed to present a welcoming atmosphere.

Despite these conditions, many disappointed customers gathered outside, unaware of the closure's reasons, which were simply noted as "closed for reasons."

On approach, many customers expressed disbelief at the reported health issues, recalling that they frequented the buffets for the perceived freshness of the food.

Some voiced concerns about the unhygienic conditions, yet confessed they continued to patronize the establishments due to their food offerings.

Witnesses described unsanitary restrooms, remarking they were foul-smelling and poorly maintained.

The other buffet exhibited even worse conditions, with signs indicating it was also non-operational.

A visit revealed dust covering surfaces and untidy arrangements of utensils and trays.

A customer commented on the visible filth in the open kitchen area, which displayed thick layers of grease and mold, a stark warning about hygiene practices.

Several patrons recounted experiencing food-related illnesses after dining at one of the buffets, noting that they had previously become ill upon consuming food from the establishment.

In response to the widespread complaints, the National Food Chain Safety Office (NKFH) released a statement indicating serious issues related to dishwashing practices, stressing improper sewage disposal methods and extensive mold contamination.

Additionally, the agency found the premises lacked adequate disinfectants and handwashing facilities.

The poor condition of food storage areas, including freezers and workspaces, violated food safety regulations.

Following consumer reports, authorities acted swiftly to permanently close both establishments, although the rapid reopening by the owner has resulted in regulatory action against him.
