Global Oil Price Surge Attributed to Geopolitical Tensions and Sanctions

Ukrainian threats to oil supply and U.S. sanctions on Russian oil exports are driving significant fuel price increases globally, affecting major importers like China and India.
The Ministry of National Economy announced on Saturday that a combination of Ukrainian threats to oil supply and U.S. sanctions has resulted in substantial increases in fuel prices.

The Ministry’s statement to MTI highlighted that the U.S. Department of the Treasury has imposed stringent sanctions on the 'shadow fleet' responsible for Russian oil exports and the associated ship insurance companies.

As a consequence, China and India, the world's largest oil importers, are compelled to procure more crude oil from other regions, such as the Middle East, Africa, or the Americas.

This shift is contributing to rising raw material prices and increasing transportation costs.

Additionally, the demand for oil is expected to grow during the cold winter months, particularly in Europe and the United States.

As a result, the price of Brent crude oil has surged by nearly 10% over the past month.

Ongoing geopolitical tensions have affected key pipelines.

The Friendship Oil Pipeline was halted in early January due to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, and the security of the TurkStream pipeline has also been jeopardized.

Both pipelines play crucial roles in Hungary's energy supply, underscoring the country's vested interest in ensuring the safe and uninterrupted operation of transportation routes.

American sanctions have amplified regional fuel price increases, including measures impacting the Serbian Oil Industry (NIS), which reduces the availability of crude oil and fuel.

In Hungary, approximately 20-30% of fuel is imported, directly influencing supply and pricing dynamics due to external market conditions.

The government has emphasized its commitment to ensuring supply security while striving to stabilize gasoline and diesel prices for families and businesses.

The government maintains the goal of keeping Hungarian fuel prices below the average of neighboring countries.

Recent data indicates that the price of gasoline was one forint cheaper in Hungary compared to neighboring countries' average price of 637 forints per liter.

Diesel, on the other hand, was one forint more expensive than the neighboring average of 654 forints per liter.

According to the latest figures from the European Commission, Hungarian fuel prices align with the average pricing in neighboring countries.

If this alignment is disrupted, the government asserts its readiness to intervene using all available means, as stated in their release.
