Freight Train Derails Near Szeged, No Injuries Reported

Freight Train Derails Near Szeged, No Injuries Reported

Train operations disrupted between Szeged and nearby regions, replacement buses deployed.
On the afternoon of January 25, 2025, a freight train derailed at the Szeged-Rendező station, resulting in the derailment of two cars, according to MÁVINFORM.

While there were no injuries or environmental hazards reported, rail traffic has been temporarily halted between Szeged and Röszke, as well as between Szeged and Kiskundorozsma.

As a result, replacement buses have been deployed along these routes.

The derailed train cars were carrying containers of lithium batteries, but there was no leakage or release of hazardous materials.

The National Havaria Center is coordinating the exceptional traffic management, and technical rescue operations are ongoing, which are expected to last at least until the evening.

Due to the accident, several adjustments in the local transit schedules have been implemented.

Key changes include the closure of the Szabadkai road railway crossing in Szeged, requiring buses 5030 and 5031 to operate on a detour route with extended travel times.

Additionally, the Napfény InterCity train from Szeged to Budapest, scheduled to depart at 13:44, has been canceled.

Meanwhile, trains on the Szeged–Békéscsaba line are not directly affected, though minor delays are possible.

According to a statement from the railway company, a freight train was the sole vehicle involved in the incident.

Efforts are underway to clear the path and restore normal traffic flow, with affected train carriages having been removed to reopen road traffic at the affected area.

Recent incidents of train derailments have prompted increased scrutiny of Hungary's rail infrastructure.

Notably, derailments also occurred at Budapest's Keleti station last year, with no injuries reported in those events.

MÁV, the national railway company, continues to investigate the causes of these incidents alongside ongoing maintenance efforts.
