Forty-Five People Killed in South African Bus Crash, Eight-Year-Old Girl Sole Survivor
In a tragic incident on Thursday in the Republic of South Africa, forty-five people lost their lives when a bus plummeted into a ravine from a bridge.
The sole survivor, an eight-year-old girl, was transported to the hospital with severe injuries.
The catastrophic bus accident occurred on March 28, Thursday, in the northeast province of Limpopo, South Africa. According to reports by the BBC, referencing South African public service media, the driver lost control of the vehicle on the Mmamatlakala valley bridge. Breaking through the barrier, the bus fell approximately fifty meters into the ravine before igniting upon impact.
The passengers onboard were pilgrims traveling from Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, to Moria in South Africa for an Easter service. Rescue operations continued into the night.
Some of the bodies were burned beyond recognition. However, Sindisiwe Chikunga, the Minister of Transport who was in the area for a road safety campaign, assured at the scene that every deceased will be returned to their families. The Minister expressed sympathy to the families of the victims and promised a thorough investigation into the tragedy, as reported by The Guardian.
