Csibi Krisztina emerges triumphant amid low voter turnout following the untimely passing of State Secretary Potápi Árpád János.
In a significant development in Hungary's regional politics, Csibi Krisztina, the candidate representing the ruling Fidesz party, secured a decisive victory in the by-election for the Tolna 02 constituency.
The election was necessitated by the sudden demise of Potápi Árpád János, the State Secretary for National Policy, who had consistently held the seat with commanding majorities since 2002.
With 98.23% of the votes counted, Csibi Krisztina garnered 63.58% of the votes, equivalent to 11,840 ballots, while her closest competitor, Dúró Dóra of the far-right Mi Hazánk party, secured 19.24% or 3,583 votes.
Takács László from the Democratic Coalition (DK) followed with 11.02%, and other candidates received minimal support.
Voter turnout was notably low, with only 33.48% of eligible voters participating.
Out of the 57,011 registered voters, 18,844 cast their votes, with 216 ballots deemed invalid.
Such turnout is characteristic of by-elections, which often suffer from decreased voter engagement compared to general elections.
Csibi, a native of Bonyhád and former director of the Magyarság Háza cultural institution, has long-standing ties with the late Potápi Árpád János, having collaborated with him over several decades.
Following her early lead on election night, Csibi took to
Facebook to express gratitude and pride in her constituency's support.
The backdrop to this election was one of strong Fidesz influence in Tolna 02.
Reports highlighted entrenched political dynamics favoring the ruling party, with many noting Fidesz's deep-rooted presence in the area.
The Tisza Party, acknowledging the preeminence of Fidesz in this district, chose not to field a candidate, advising supporters against voting, deeming the by-election as lacking in genuine contestation.
The results and voter engagement provide insight into regional political sentiments and the enduring influence of Fidesz, set against a backdrop of broader national discussions around political longevity and party dominance in Hungary.
