Washington, D.C. : The Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has called for increased budgetary resources to address the heightened threat of coordinated terror attacks against the United States.
During a congressional hearing on Thursday, Christopher Wray emphasized the rise in threats post-October 7, from various foreign terrorist organizations urging assaults against Americans and their allies.
At a committee meeting discussing the fiscal year 2025 budget, Wray highlighted the immediate danger stemming from individuals or small groups domestically inspired by these calls to action to commit terror attacks. He also pointed out the Moscow attack by the Islamic State's Afghan branch, increasing genuine concerns about coordinated terrorist actions.
"We need every tool, every person, and every resource now more than ever to combat the threat and to keep ซAmericans safe," declared the FBI Director, asserting that now is not the time for budget cuts or any form of scale-back.
In a related development, U.S. authorities arrested a teenager in Idaho over the weekend, suspected of preparing a terror act in a church on behalf of the Islamic State.
18-year-old Alexander Mercurio was apprehended on Saturday, a day before the alleged planned attack. Prosecutors allege Mercurio intended to target a church near his home in Coeur d'Alene city on Sunday, armed with flammable materials, a machete, a metal pipe, and a firearm stolen from his father.
Investigations revealed that Mercurio converted to Islam against his Christian parents' wishes. He claimed to have first contacted an Islamic State group during the school closures at the start of the
COVID-19 pandemic as a child. Over approximately two years, he communicated with undercover FBI agents posing as members of the Islamic State.
The FBI's call for increased resources underscores the ongoing and complex threat landscape, demonstrating the agency's commitment to preempting and responding to terror activities to ensure national security.
