Fatal Fire in a Social Institution in Ökörítófülpös
Investigation Launched to Discover the Cause of the Fire.
A fire broke out on Thursday morning at an elderly home in Ökörítófülpös, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, where firefighters discovered the body of a man in one of the rooms and twenty-six individuals suffered from smoke inhalation, as reported by the spokesperson for the National Directorate General for Disaster Management to the Hungarian News Agency (MTI).
Daniel Mukics stated in the announcement that nineteen firefighters responded with five vehicles to the institution located on Kossuth Lajos Street, where twenty-five residents and two caregivers were present in the single-story building.
The fire, which started in the bed and the wheelchair next to it in one of the rooms, was initially attempted to be extinguished by a staff member through the window using a powder extinguisher, according to the spokesperson. Four elderly residents were rescued by the firefighters.
The body of a man with mobility impairments was found on a bed in one of the rooms, and twenty-six individuals suffered from smoke inhalation, Daniel Mukics shared, adding that the glowing parts were cooled down by the firefighters, who then scanned and ventilated the building with a thermal camera.
The fire was likely caused by smoking in bed, and an investigation has been initiated to uncover the exact circumstances behind its origin.
