Famed Eurasian Eagle Owl That Escaped Central Park Zoo Dies After Likely Building Collision
R.I.P. Flaco.
Flaco, the Eurasian Eagle Owl that famously escaped from the Central Park Zoo and gained celebrity status with his escapades across Manhattan, has died following an apparent collision with a building on the Upper West Side, reports The Washington Post.
The owl had been on the lam for an entire year since someone cut through the steel mesh of his enclosure. "The vandal who caused Flaco's escape is ultimately responsible for his death. We hope that the police will eventually catch the perpetrator," the zoo stated in its press release.
Flaco was found after seemingly crashing into a building on West 89th Street in Manhattan. The 13-year-old bird was then taken to the Bronx Zoo for a necropsy.
In the weeks following his breakout, Flaco made headlines as various bird enthusiasts tried to capture him and tracked his movements throughout Manhattan, documenting the locations where he was spotted.
