Does your haircare need to change with the seasons? We investigate

We spoke to a hair expert to on how our hair behaves when the weather changes. Here's what you need to know about trans-seasonal haircare.

Did you know that your skin and hair have a remarkably similar make-up?

As such, the same environmental factors that can damage your skin, can also wreck havoc on your hair. We hear a lot about changing our skincare to suit the changing seasons, while seasonal haircare is something that often flies under the radar. But it's just as important. When your skin's needs change in different weather, so does the needs of your hair.

We connected with April Roberts, National Trainer, Hair Rituel by Sisley Paris to ask all about trans-seasonal haircare. She says that avoiding heat is key and reminds us to treat our scalps with care.

Does your haircare need to change from season to season?

Just like we would change our skincare from season to season our haircare needs to also be changed depending on the time of year.

During the summer months there is an increase in humidity and this can wreak havoc for your hair fibre causing it to become frizzy and dry plus you may also notice an increase in oil on your scalp due to the heat. To combat frizz and dry hair try a smoothing shampoo like Sisley's Hair Rituel Smoothing Shampoo will leave your hair softer, shinier and smooth with the help of some beautiful plant extracts such as Shea Oil and Macadamia Oil.

To help with excess oil on the scalp a purifying mask is a must. Try something with white clay to absorb excess sebum and impurities (without drying the hair out) plus cottonseed extract to make your hair fibre stronger, this is a true hair reset. Your scalp is rebalanced and stays cleaner for longer.

In the cold winter months you may notice your skin to be a bit drier, sensitive and feeling dehydrated and these conditions can also extend to your scalp. Your scalp is an extension of the skin on your face. This is where we need to work on moisturising and soothing your scalp and hair.

Does your hair need more TLC in winter? Why or why not?

We do need to look after our hair and also our scalp more in winter. The constant exposure to the cold plus combined with sitting in front of the heater to keep ourselves warm, causes the hair to lose moisture leading to dry, split ends. Your scalp also suffers as well where we may find an increase in sensitivity, dryness and even sometimes dandruff. It's important to use products that are going to help restore moisture to dry, split ends and soothe an uncomfortable scalp.

What should we do during the transitional seasons to prepare?

When going from hot to cool months we should limit our hair and scalp from excess heat as this can dehydrate the hair fibre and also our scalps.

Committing to weekly treatments for your scalp and hair will help to replace any loss moisture and also control frizz.

What should we be doing for our hair in the coolers months?

One way to avoid dry hair and scalp is to avoid overwashing your hair. Keep washing two to three times a week. If you find your hair gets oily or dirty quickly try Sisley Hair Rituel Pre Shampoo Purifying Mask with White Clay. It will leave your hair feeling cleaner for longer.

What’s the worst thing we can do for our hair when it’s cold?

The worst thing we can do is going outside wet hair. When our hair is wet the hair fibre expands and can lead to breakage.

Washing your hair with super-hot water. We know that hot water can dry our skin out and the same happens to our scalp and hair fibre. Try and have a lukewarm shoer to prevent further dryness.

Also, using sulfate shampoos. Sulfates are a common ingredient found in shampoos to give the foaming effect and make you think your hair is left super clean. In fact what sulfates do is they strip the scalp of oil and moisture leading to sensitivity, an overproduction of oil and dryness. Our Sisley Hair Rituel Shampoos are sulfate-free options.

What do you wish more people knew about winter hair care?

Haircare is the new skincare and at Sisley we understand the importance of not only looking after the health of your hair fibre but also your scalp. Without nourishing and feeding the scalp with vitamins, minerals and proteins your hair fibre is not going to be at its best.

Investing in good hair and scalp care treatments is important for healthy, radiant and strong hair.
