DK Holds Torch Parade Ahead of By-Election as Varju László Seeks Re-election

The demonstration, coinciding with the anniversary of the 1848 revolution, featured speeches highlighting current political tensions and the upcoming electoral contest.
The Democratic Coalition (DK) held a torch-lit procession in Újpest on the eve of the anniversary of the 1848 revolution, an event dedicated to remembering Hungary's fight for freedom and independence.

Klára Dobrev, a Member of the European Parliament and prominent DK figure, addressed the crowd, asserting that the struggle for freedom and European values requires strong leadership, which she indicated Varju László is prepared to provide.

Varju, facing legal convictions related to disorderly conduct, physical assault, and election-related offenses, has resigned from his parliamentary seat in anticipation of the upcoming by-election scheduled for March 23.

The event included a commemoration by Norbert Trippon, the party's mayor in Újpest, who recounted the significance of the historic events from 177 years ago.

He highlighted the area’s engagement at that time, emphasizing its transformation over the years.

The procession featured a striking banner that read, “The cockade is not a matter of fashion - being leftist is not either,” carried to the front by prominent DK politicians, alongside Jakab Péter, the current leader of the People's Party and former head of Jobbik.

In her speech, Dobrev remarked on the changing global order, suggesting that the years 2024 to 2026 could be pivotal in altering the course of history.

She criticized profitable banking entities and large corporations like MOL for accumulating wealth while ordinary citizens struggle to meet basic expenses.

Dobrev posed rhetorical questions reflecting on the sacrifices of 1848, linking historical struggles to contemporary challenges, and noted Varju László’s multiples victories over Fidesz in past elections, suggesting his ability to succeed again in the forthcoming vote.

Varju himself reaffirmed the need to uphold equality before the law and emphasized that freedom, as interpreted by the ruling government, equates to corruption and betrayal.

He called for solidarity among Hungarians and criticized the Fidesz government for dividing the nation.

The upcoming by-election in Újpest-Angyalföld is viewed as a significant contest for both the Democratic Coalition and the ruling Fidesz party, amid ongoing debates regarding the influence of large corporations in Hungarian politics and society.
