Ceasefire Agreement Between Israel and Hamas Activated After Delays

A ceasefire facilitated by Qatar, Egypt, and the U.S. takes effect after prisoner exchange details are finalized.
On January 19, 2025, a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was finally enacted, following a delay caused by technical reasons cited by Hamas.

This delay pertained to the announcement of names involved in an agreed prisoner exchange, originally scheduled for earlier implementation.

The ceasefire deal, mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, required both parties to disclose the names of individuals selected for release 24 hours before the exchange.

The delay occurred when Hamas did not promptly release the names of three Israeli hostages.

As per the agreement, the ceasefire was intended to start at 8:30 AM, however, it was postponed as Israel's military operations continued due to the delay.

Israeli airstrikes in Gaza resulted in the reported deaths of at least thirteen Palestinians before the ceasefire took hold.

Hamas later announced the identities of three female hostages via Telegram: Doron Steinbrecher, Romi Gonen, and Emily Damari.

This disclosure fulfilled the conditions for the ceasefire which subsequently began at 10:15 AM.

Under the terms of the ceasefire, all military actions will cease, and humanitarian aid shipments will be permitted entry into the Gaza Strip by Israel.

These provisions allow for the delivery of approximately 4,000 trucks worth of supplies currently awaiting passage at the border.

The truce has led to political ramifications within Israel, notably the resignation of Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel's National Security Minister, who criticized the ceasefire in his resignation statement.

The conflict, ignited by a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, led to significant casualties on both sides, with Israel reporting over 1,200 deaths and subsequent military responses resulting in the deaths of nearly 47,000 Palestinians.

During this period, Hamas captured 251 Israelis and took them to Gaza.

For the first 42 days of the ceasefire, 33 Israeli hostages, including women, children, and the elderly, will be released in exchange for 1,000 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

The negotiations for the further phases of the truce will involve the potential withdrawal of Israeli forces from more civilian areas in Gaza.

The first phase of the agreement includes the release of prominent hostages such as Kfir Bibas, now two years old, and Shlomo Mantzur, aged 86, underlining the broad demographic range of the captives involved.

Continuing discussions are expected to focus on establishing a permanent cessation of hostilities, with subsequent phases potentially addressing the reconstruction of Gaza.
