A Wooded Retreat With Two Shingle-Clad Homes in Carmel

A Wooded Retreat With Two Shingle-Clad Homes in Carmel

On nearly three acres, two remodeled dwellings are enveloped by the bucolic setting of Central California.

It’s no surprise why so many people flock to Carmel-by-the-Sea. Located on California’s Monterey Peninsula, the quaint and charming city-which is often referred to simply as Carmel-is revered for its rich history and artistic flair, but also its spellbinding natural scenery. Recently, a nearby compound that captures the allure of the region just hit the market, offering two updated homes.

The larger of the two homes on the property overlooks the surrounding canyons. It measures 2,600 square feet, and includes a 2,000-square-foot deck.

Tucked away just one mile inland on two and a half acres, just 20 minutes from the heart of Carmel, the two-dwelling property is a secluded natural oasis. "Originally, the stunning views drew us [to the property], but in the end, it is the fresh ocean air-gently perfumed with wild sage, eucalyptus, and redwood-that has created such a slice of paradise," note the current owners. "At any given moment, we might see a fox, deer, bobcat, or a myriad of canyon birds, such as blue jays, black eyed juncos, and hawks."

Thanks to a recent remodel, a trove of modern touches can now be found throughout the home, including concrete floors with radiant heating.

The property’s two turn-key homes combine for a total of 3,800 square feet. The main residence, which accounts for about a third of that space, is nestled on a hillside overlooking the surrounding canyons. Built in 1962, the home was recently remodeled and now offers numerous modern touches, such as concrete floors with radiant heating and a 2,000-square-foot deck to foster indoor/outdoor living.

In the living room, original beams run across the ceilings, while expansive, wood-framed windows span the south-facing wall. Outside, a large grilling patio looks out over the surrounding canyons.

Wraparound windows invite plenty of natural light inside, while exposed beams and wood-clad ceilings enhance the home’s rustic aesthetic. The open-concept kitchen features all new appliances, and provides direct access to the adjacent outdoor patio. In total, the home offers three bedrooms, two full baths, and an office/studio on the upper level with a private balcony.

A loft-like mezzanine on the upper level overlooks the kitchen and dining areas.

Exposed beams continue in the kitchen, complementing the vaulted, wood-clad ceilings.

The second property included on the estate is a 1,200-square-foot cabin that’s enveloped by towering redwoods. Though smaller in size, it also offers three bedrooms and two full baths, in addition to remodeled living spaces and several outdoor gathering areas.

Large, sliding glass doors connect the dining area with an adjacent deck.

"The year-round creek provides soothing background music while relaxing in solitude on the guesthouse deck," state the owners. "At night we would stargaze in silence, except for the occasional distant hoot of an owl." Scroll ahead to see more of the two-home compound, listed for $1,675,000.

The view from the mezzanine showcases the soaring ceilings in the kitchen and dining area.

Each of the three bedrooms in the main home are well lit, thanks to large windows.

On one end of the upper level is a large office/studio space, complete with a vaulted ceiling and French doors that open to a private balcony.

Enveloped in a grove of redwoods, the cabin on the property offers 1,200 square feet of remodeled living space.

The shingle cabin comes with a side deck and private jacuzzi.

Similar to the main residence, the cabin features an open layout, complete with tall ceilings, wooden accents, and numerous large windows that provide ample light.

The property’s three acres comprise verdant forests, canyons, and lush, open spaces, all just 20 minutes from the heart of Carmel.
