Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticizes the demands put forth by Russian President Vladimir Putin during discussions with Donald Trump regarding the ongoing conflict.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has responded critically to the conditions proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a phone call with former U.S. President
Donald Trump.
Zelensky articulated that Putin's demands, which include the cessation of military assistance to Ukraine, the termination of intelligence cooperation, and putting an end to Ukraine's mobilization efforts, appear designed explicitly to undermine Ukraine's defense capabilities.
Zelensky stated that these conditions do not promote peace but would rather render Ukraine more vulnerable to ongoing Russian aggression.
He highlighted that the Russian military is reportedly preparing for new offensives in the Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions, aiming to apply maximum pressure on Ukraine both on the front lines and in negotiation terms.
The Ukrainian leader expressed support for initiatives ensuring that Russia does not target Ukraine's energy network and infrastructure.
However, when asked if Ukraine would reciprocate, Zelensky responded that discussions facilitated by the United States could lead to an agreement where both nations would mutually refrain from attacking each other's energy infrastructures.
Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is open to proposals for peace, provided they lead to a stable and just resolution.
He noted that the release of Ukrainian prisoners could serve as a genuine indicator of Russia's seriousness in negotiations.
Previously, the White House announced that Trump and Putin agreed on a limited ceasefire lasting 30 days concerning targets related to Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
They also indicated that broader peace plan discussions would commence immediately.
Following Trump's communication with Putin, Zelensky indicated the importance of speaking with Trump to thoroughly understand what proposals had been made by the Russians and the Americans.
He confirmed discussions with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron after the Trump-Putin conversation, asserting that talks conducted 'about Ukraine without Ukraine' would not yield positive outcomes.
