Ukraine Targets Russian Airbase Fuel Depot in Drone Strike
Engels, located deep in Russia and hosting strategic bombers, hit by Ukrainian drones.
In a bold move during ongoing hostilities, Ukraine carried out a drone strike overnight on Engels, a city deep within Russian territory.
This attack resulted in a fire at a fuel depot, which reportedly supports a significant Russian airbase, Engels-2, home to nuclear-capable bombers including the Tu-160 and Tu-95MS.
The Kyiv Independent cited a statement from the Ukrainian military, framing the strike as a considerable setback to Russian aviation capabilities that have been used against Ukrainian targets.
Roman Busargin, governor of the Saratov region, confirmed debris from the Ukrainian drones fell on industrial facilities in the area.
Local reports cited by Reuters mentioned a 'mass drone attack' early on Wednesday, with no casualties reported, and efforts are underway to contain the fire, according to Busargin.
The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that 11 Ukrainian drones had been shot down over Saratov during this period.
The Engels airbase, strategically located roughly 730 kilometers southeast of Moscow and several hundred kilometers from the Ukrainian border, has previously been targeted.
Notably, an incident in December 2022 resulted in the deaths of three Russian military personnel after a drone strike on the base.
This incident highlights Ukraine’s use of long-range capabilities, as noted by Oleksandr Kamyshin, an advisor to President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Kamyshin emphasized, using the hashtag #MadeInUkraine, that domestically manufactured technology was employed, rather than Western-supplied armaments.
Social media was abuzz with videos purportedly showing large blazes, substantiated by satellite imagery from Reuters, which confirmed the location in Engels’ industrial area.
Despite the damage reported by Ukrainian sources, Russian officials maintained that the situation was under control with no significant injuries or additional damage reported.
Residents were urged to stay calm and avoid documenting drone activities.
Elsewhere, Ukraine announced another attack on an alleged Russian command post in the Russian-occupied Donetsk region, purportedly disrupting military operations against Ukrainian targets.
Meanwhile, Russian offensives continue in southeastern Ukraine, with reports of civilian casualties in a strike on Zaporizhzhia.
As heavy fighting continues, both Ukraine and Russia remain locked in a grueling conflict with no clear end in sight.
The Ukrainian leadership remains hopeful for resolution through protracted negotiations, as external military and political landscapes continue to evolve.
