Ukraine Accepts Ceasefire Proposal Amid Renewed Peace Talks

In a significant development, Ukraine has expressed willingness to accept a 30-day ceasefire proposal following negotiations in Saudi Arabia.
Recent negotiations held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, have brought new hope for an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Following extensive discussions between American and Ukrainian officials, the U.S. government announced a resumption of arms supplies to Ukraine and a continuation of intelligence sharing.

As part of the developments, Ukraine has demonstrated its readiness to accept an immediate, temporary ceasefire lasting 30 days.

The negotiations took place at the Ritz-Carlton hotel, where delegations from both nations sought common ground to facilitate a resolution to the war.

The American delegation was led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, while key figures from the Ukrainian side included Andriy Yermak, Andriy Sibih, and Rustem Umerov.

The discussions were aimed at identifying concessions that would be necessary from Kyiv to achieve peace.

During the talks, Secretary Rubio emphasized U.S. commitment to ending hostilities and supporting Ukraine through necessary measures.

Yermak stated that Ukraine is prepared to take any steps necessary to establish peace and expressed hope that the outcomes of the meetings would hasten the conflict's resolution.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was also present in Jeddah, although he did not participate in the negotiations.

He held bilateral discussions with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, where he reaffirmed Kyiv’s expectations for results that would both advance peace and ensure continued American support.

As a result of the talks, the U.S. State Department announced the immediate lifting of the arms supply ban and the continuation of intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

Furthermore, as part of the agreement, Ukraine accepted the 30-day ceasefire, which is anticipated to facilitate steps toward reaching a lasting peace.

Marco Rubio stated that the proposal will now be presented to Russian officials, expressing hope for their acceptance.

He reiterated that the initiative is now in Russia's court, reinforcing the administration's objective to conclude the conflict.

Mike Waltz, a national security advisor, elaborated that discussions included detailed insights into how the war can be concluded definitively, as well as potential guarantees for long-term security.

In the upcoming days, further discussions are planned between U.S. officials and their Russian counterparts.

Secretary Rubio will also engage with foreign ministers from the G7 nations to advance the diplomatic process.

Rubio was queried about the possibility of accepting any goodwill gestures from Russia and whether there is a specific timeline for acceptance.

He affirmed that Ukraine is ready to cease hostilities and to engage at the negotiating table.

He underscored confidence that Russia would accept the ceasefire, but noted that rejection would clarify obstacles to achieving peace.

He stated that the administration’s clear aim is to end hostilities and reduce the human toll as soon as possible.

Regarding any deadlines, Rubio stated the hope for implementation as soon as possible.

Rubio and Waltz were also asked about the reason for not signing an agreement concerning rare earth minerals, which was not on the agenda for the day’s discussions.

Rubio indicated that consultations were ongoing with both U.S. and Ukrainian treasury officials, with directives from their respective leaders to finalize and conclude the agreement.

President Zelenskyy later communicated via social media, outlining the productive discussions held in Saudi Arabia and reiterating Ukraine’s steadfast commitment to peace from the onset of the conflict.

He emphasized that the autonomy of his delegation is crucial in negotiating vital details.

Zelenskyy articulated three key proposals for the American side, including:
- An immediate cessation of aerial assaults, drone strikes, and missile attacks;
- Implementing genuine confidence-building measures during ongoing diplomatic processes, particularly concerning the release of prisoners of war and civilians;
- The return of Ukrainian children forcibly relocated to Russia.

He stated that the American side understands Ukraine's arguments and is considering the proposals, expressing gratitude for the constructive nature of the discussions.

Zelenskyy concluded that Ukraine is ready to positively respond to the suggestion of a 30-day ceasefire, waiting for the U.S. to persuade Russia to agree likewise.

Should Russia accept the proposal, the ceasefire would take effect immediately.
