Mayor of Győr calls for diplomatic intervention against U.S. tariffs impacting the automotive sector.
On April 2, 2023, U.S. President
Donald Trump announced a comprehensive tariff initiative that has raised concerns globally.
The U.S. government plans to impose a 20% tariff on products imported from the European Union and a 34% tariff on goods from China, with similar measures targeting virtually all other countries, none escaping tariffs lower than 10%.
According to the International Monetary Fund, these actions pose significant risks to the global economy.
As part of this initiative, a 25% tariff on all imported vehicles is also set to take effect.
This decision is particularly concerning for Győr, Hungary, home to Audi Hungária, one of the largest engine plants in the world, which supports approximately 12,000 jobs in the region.
Pintér Bence, the mayor of Győr, has publicly stated that the issue cannot be resolved merely from the mayor's office and requires diplomatic efforts.
He has addressed an open letter to Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, urging him to seek solutions to mitigate the impact of the U.S. tariffs.
In his letter, Pintér emphasized two pressing needs: to attract high value-added, innovative, and research-oriented American investments to Győr in the near future, and to initiate negotiations with the U.S. administration regarding the withdrawal of the 25% tariffs on automobiles at a European level.
Pintér described the current situation as severe and warned that it could escalate to critical levels if action is not taken promptly.
On the previous Thursday, Szijjártó had already responded to the tariffs, indicating that the European Commission was partly responsible for the current escalation of the situation.
