President-Elect Trump Calls for an End to the 'Carnage' in Ukraine and Talks About Diplomatic Negotiations
On Monday, U.S. President-elect
Donald Trump referred to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as 'carnage,' drawing attention to the devastation in cities and the grim images of casualties.
He stressed the importance of ending the hostilities and expressed cautious optimism about the progress towards achieving a ceasefire.
In his first press conference since his election victory in November, Trump highlighted the seriousness of the situation, noting the unprecedented violence and loss of life.
'People are being killed at levels that nobody’s ever seen,' he remarked, referring to the landscapes of Ukraine now marred by conflict.
Trump suggested that the actual death toll may be higher than reports from Kyiv and Moscow indicate.
He committed to engaging with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to seek a resolution.
Trump's transition team is working on a strategy to facilitate negotiations between the two nations, acknowledging that compromises may be necessary.
While noting Kyiv's aims for restoring territorial integrity, Trump commented on the extensive destruction of many Ukrainian cities, reflecting on the difficult realities facing both sides.
In a controversial statement, Trump claimed that 'four years ago we had no wars,' overlooking Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and subsequent involvement in Eastern Ukraine during his presidency.
Despite this omission, he was the first U.S. president to provide Ukraine with weapons.
During the press conference, Trump also mentioned his previous decision to launch missiles at Syria.
Notably, although Trump discussed the Ukraine situation, he refrained from directly condemning Russia's invasion and remained vague about whether he had communicated with Putin.
Nonetheless, he conveyed that President Zelenskyy expressed a desire for peace.
'We’d like to get them to stop in Ukraine and Ukraine to stop also,' Trump stated, emphasizing the shared goal of ending the conflict.
