The leaders of the United States and Russia agree on the necessity of a ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
On March 18, 2025, former U.S. President
Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone call lasting more than one and a half hours to discuss the potential for closing the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The White House released a statement indicating that both leaders addressed the need for 'peace and a ceasefire' regarding the Ukraine conflict.
The statement highlighted several points of agreement between Trump and Putin:
- Both leaders concurred that the conflict should conclude with a lasting peace.
- They agreed that moving towards peace would begin with a ceasefire regarding energy and infrastructure as well as maritime safety in the Black Sea, along with technical discussions on a total ceasefire and lasting peace.
- Both acknowledged the significant benefits of improved bilateral relations between the United States and Russia, which would include economic cooperation and 'geopolitical stability' contingent upon the realization of peace.
- Discussion also included the Middle East, the necessity of halting the proliferation of strategic weapons, and issues concerning Iran.
Following the conversation, Trump communicated on social media that he and Putin had committed to 'working quickly' towards a 'complete ceasefire' and ultimately ending the 'horrific war' between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump stated, 'We discussed many elements of a peace agreement, including the fact that thousands of soldiers are being killed, and both President Putin and President Zelensky want it to end.
This process has now started, and we, hopefully for the sake of humanity, will get the job done!'
An unnamed Russian source familiar with the call described the discussions as having gone 'very well.' Kirill Dmitriev, a Russian envoy for international cooperation, elaborated on social media that 'the world has become a much safer place under the leadership of President Putin and President Trump! Historically significant!'
According to the Kremlin, President Putin endorsed Trump’s proposal for a 30-day halt to strikes on energy infrastructure.
Putin reportedly instructed the military to implement this directive.
The Kremlin also noted that the two leaders engaged in a 'detailed and candid exchange' about the situation in Ukraine.
Putin informed Trump that Russia and Ukraine would conduct a prisoner exchange on Wednesday, involving the swap of 175 Russian and 175 Ukrainian soldiers.
Additionally, Russia will transfer 23 severely wounded Ukrainian soldiers to Kyiv as a goodwill gesture.
Putin constructively responded to Trump’s initiative regarding maritime security in the Black Sea, as confirmed by the Kremlin.
Reports indicate that both leaders expressed mutual interest in normalizing relations, recognizing their shared responsibility for global security, and agreed to maintain contact moving forward.
Putin reaffirmed his commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine and expressed willingness to collaborate with Washington on establishing a sustainable and long-term settlement.
The parties also agreed to set up 'expert groups' from both Russia and the United States to continue the discussions.
However, Putin emphasized that an essential condition for seeking a political and diplomatic resolution to the conflict is the complete cessation of foreign military aid and intelligence support provided to Kyiv.
