The experienced mountaineer died while attempting to summit Lhoce peak, marking a significant loss in the climbing community.
Vágó Barna Zsolt, a 48-year-old Romanian-Hungarian climber, has died while attempting to summit Lhoce, the world’s fourth highest peak at 8,516 meters, as reported by Romanian media.
The incident occurred on Sunday during an expedition organized by Himalayan Guides.
His death marks the eighth climber fatality of the current climbing season in the region.
In a related incident on the same day, Rakesh Kumar, a 39-year-old Indian mountaineer, also lost his life near Lhoce.
According to Makalu Adventure, the company managing his ascent, Kumar collapsed while descending from the camp located at an altitude of 8,000 meters, and was unable to be resuscitated by his accompanying Sherpa.
Vágó Barna Zsolt was a veteran of the Romanian media landscape, having served for 22 years as a cameraman for Pro TV, one of Romania's largest commercial television networks.
The network commemorated him as one of their most experienced and talented cameramen, noting his passion for filmmaking and mountaineering.
Following numerous expeditions in the Carpathians, he expanded his climbing pursuits internationally, successfully summiting Mont Blanc in the Alps and the technically challenging Ama Dablam in Nepal earlier in 2023.
His latest expedition commenced over a month ago, and his final social media post on May 5 indicated that he was approaching the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.
During his ascent, he surpassed 8,000 meters, but ultimately could not withstand the physical challenges faced at such altitude.
In one of his last
Facebook updates, Vágó expressed that during his trip in Nepal, he had met Kanchha Sherpa, the last surviving member of the first Everest expedition, who is now 94 years old, which left a deep impression on him.
