The Rise of Electronic Payments in Hungary: A Case Study of Zoltán Feith's OFSZ

Exploring the transformative impact of electronic payment systems on local businesses through the lens of Zoltán Feith's ventures.
Zoltán Feith has identified a significant shift toward electronic payment transactions in Hungary and worldwide, focusing on an overlooked sector: lower-traffic micro-retailers, including rural shops, restaurants, and service providers.

Recognizing a gap in the market a decade ago, Feith developed a business model that addressed this segment, which was largely ignored by credit card companies and local banks.

His model allowed customers to benefit from low transaction fees, under 1%, while generating income from the high volume of integrated services offered.

Feith's payment system is built around the idea that every individual transaction can create opportunities for increased service value.

Each step, from accepting card payments to the money briefly residing in the account before it is spent, contributes to revenue generation.

In interviews, Feith has demonstrated a diverse knowledge base, referencing topics ranging from Japanese culture to classical and alternative music, showing a broad intellectual curiosity that drives his business vision.

Initially aspiring to be a historian, Feith has a background in law and cultural anthropology, attributes he believes enrich his business acumen.

His entrepreneurial journey began while he was still a university student, organizing events that led to surprising financial success.

This experience ignited in him a desire for financial independence, demonstrated in his extensive personal library now totaling around 15,000 books, emphasizing a continuing passion for knowledge.

Feith's ventures took a major turn during the 2008 global financial crisis when he divested from real estate development in favor of actively pursuing opportunities in electronic payments.

A pivotal moment occurred in 2011 when he encountered a study by the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB) indicating that less than 10% of domestic transactions were electronic, with cash payments incurring significant societal costs.

This contrasted sharply with Scandinavian countries, where the electronic transaction rates were nearing 80%.

This disparity signaled a substantial market opportunity to Feith.

Driven by these insights, Feith founded Országos Fizetési Szolgáltató (OFSZ) in 2012, a licensed payment service provider in Hungary and a full member of key domestic payment systems, including Mastercard and Visa.

Unlike traditional banks, OFSZ does not engage in lending or deposit collecting but provides comprehensive transaction services.

Partnering with another company, Payment Point Kft., they deliver independent Point of Sale (POS) terminal services tailored for small retailers.

Feith's model, described as IT service-oriented, incorporates considerable automation while emphasizing the importance of customer experience, highlighting that personal interactions remain a pivotal aspect of service delivery.

The new dynamics of payment transactions, evolving with technological advancements, have shifted the traditional paradigm from direct exchanges to electronic systems, facilitating transactions from anywhere at any time.

Feith recognizes that competition in the e-commerce space may shift favor towards global players who possess the necessary capital and technology, suggesting local companies may struggle to compete in the long term.

However, he anticipates that the POS service sector will continue as a regional market opportunity.

In Feith's integrated business model, competitive pricing across services creates a high combined value for clients.

For example, his services not only include POS terminals but also offer a complete bank account and card, with swift crediting of funds to merchants—often the next morning, moving towards immediate crediting of sales amounts as a planned enhancement.

The model's efficiency stems from the comprehensive services surrounding the customer’s money movement, generating fees when consumers make payments, earn interest from deposits held, and when those funds are utilized.

This approach has allowed OFSZ to maintain competitive pricing while facilitating appealing offers for merchants.

The emphasis on user-friendly services is further exemplified by a customer service policy instituted two years ago, ensuring that calls are answered within five seconds, in stark contrast to many competitors’ impersonal automated systems.

Additionally, Feith's innovative simplification of the company’s bank account numbers has added to its competitive edge.

By collaborating with MNB, he established a unique identifier, allowing for a streamlined account number structure aimed at improving customer accessibility.

Annual revenues for OFSZ have shown significant growth, increasing from 3.9 billion HUF in 2020 to an anticipated 11.2 billion HUF in 2023, alongside robust profitability.

Feith has outlined future plans to elevate their service platform to rival established entities like Revolut and Wise, hinting at expansion into neighboring markets.

While Feith is committed to the success of his ventures, he acknowledges the need to transition some operational responsibilities to foster growth, which he likens to a necessary evolution in Guiding a startup.

His extensive involvement in cultural patronage reflects his belief in preserving and nurturing intellectual and artistic values, underscoring a philosophy that intertwines cultural support with business aspirations.
