Shift in Career Aspirations Among Hungarian Graduates: Rise in Entrepreneurship

A recent study reveals a growing trend of Hungarian graduates considering entrepreneurship five years post-graduation.
A significant shift in career aspirations has been highlighted in a recent study conducted by GUESSS, which examined the preferences of Hungarian graduates.

Upon graduating, 71.1% of fresh graduates envision their future as employees; however, this figure drops to 51.8% five years later.

Concurrently, the proportion of graduates planning to start their own businesses rises markedly from 13.8% to 32.9% over the same period.

Andrea Sáfrányné Gubik, a university lecturer at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Miskolc, explained that young graduates typically first seek employment to gain experience before feeling more confident in venturing into entrepreneurship.

The research indicated notable differences in entrepreneurial intent based on fields of study.

Students from programs in business management, law, and arts exhibited a higher openness to starting their own businesses, while those from natural sciences, mathematics, and IT fields tended to prefer stable employment.

The influence of family background was also identified as a significant factor, with a higher inclination towards entrepreneurship observed among graduates whose parents are entrepreneurs.

One of the challenges facing aspiring young entrepreneurs is gaining visibility and promoting their work.

The OTP Bank has initiated a new program titled OTP Junior Piacralépők to aid these individuals.

The program, which will air episodes starting June 18, 2025, on the bank's YouTube channel, features ten young entrepreneurs competing for a grand prize of 10 million Hungarian forints to further develop their businesses.

Bernadett Dancsné Engler, Head of the Micro and Small Enterprises Division at OTP Bank, stated that the program aims to equip ambitious young individuals with the essential skills and competencies needed for starting, operating, and sustaining their businesses.

The series showcases the challenges and opportunities of entrepreneurship through the ideas of young contestants, who will face real business tasks under three months of professional mentorship.

The mentors for the program include Janka Cserháti-Herold (Hormonmentes.hu), Simon Tóth (Simon’s Burger), and Albert Wettstein (Munch), who will provide guidance and share their extensive entrepreneurial experiences with the participants.

The winner of the eight-episode series will be revealed in the fall following the finals.
