Severe Winter Weather Forecast for Southern Hungary

Meteorological warnings issued for significant snowfall across multiple counties this weekend.
Hungary's Southern Transdanubia region is bracing for severe winter weather as a cold front approaches.

The Hungarian Meteorological Service has issued a warning of expected snowfall, predicting accumulation of more than 10 centimeters in certain areas, alongside strong cooling and gusty winds.

Snowfall has already commenced in the Mecsek Mountains since Friday morning, with conditions expected to persist through the weekend.

Warnings have been issued for Baranya, Tolna, and Somogy counties due to the anticipated snowfall.

Forecasts indicate that between 2 to 10 centimeters of fresh snow could fall by late Friday evening, with potential snow depths exceeding 5 centimeters in localized flatland areas.

Higher elevations in the Mecsek could see accumulations surpassing 10 centimeters.

As polar air masses flow into the region post-frontal passage, significant temperature drops are expected.

Daytime temperatures on Friday are projected to range from 1 to 6 degrees Celsius, dropping to between -3 and +2 degrees Celsius by nightfall.

Additionally, northern winds will strengthen across the Transdanubia and northeastern regions, potentially exacerbating the cold conditions.

Intense snowfall has already been observed near the Pécs TV tower, where conditions are described as wintry.

While lower areas experience rain and sleet, the elevated Mecsek region is witnessing heavy snow.

Weather forecasts for the weekend indicate continued cold and snowy conditions.

By Friday night, cloud cover is expected to gradually diminish, though southern counties may remain overcast into Saturday morning.

Snow showers are also likely in the Danube–Tisza region and Western Transdanubia.

On Saturday, temperatures are forecasted to remain between 0 and +3 degrees Celsius during the day, with frigid overnight lows reaching down to -6 degrees Celsius.

On Sunday, the likelihood of further snowfall diminishes, but northern areas may experience increased cloudiness with occasional flurries.

Frosty mornings will continue, with temperatures in some locations potentially falling below -10 degrees Celsius.

Authorities are advising increased caution while driving, particularly in southern regions and mountainous areas due to the snowy conditions.
