McLaren drivers Piastri and Norris achieve a historic one-two finish, while Verstappen's late struggles result in a dramatic drop in standings.
In a closely contested qualifying session for the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri of McLaren secured pole position with a time just 0.209 seconds ahead of his teammate Lando Norris.
This marks the narrowest margin yet seen in pole qualifying this season.
Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and George Russell (
Mercedes) tied with the same qualifying time, separating them from Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and Kimi Antonelli (
Mercedes).
Notably, Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) did not compete in the race due to hand and wrist pain, with potential surgery on the horizon for the Canadian driver.
A total of 18 cars initiated the race, with Yuki Tsunoda (Red Bull) starting from the pits after a slow qualifying session.
The race commenced with Piastri taking a strong lead, although Norris experienced a slower start allowing Verstappen to overtake him.
Hamilton gained a position, while Russell lost two places during the opening lap, falling behind Leclerc, who managed to advance in the field.
By lap 10, Norris had closed the gap to Verstappen, prompting a strategy change for Ferrari as they instructed Hamilton to let Leclerc pass.
Norris successfully overtook Verstappen on lap 13, marking a significant moment in the race as teams began to implement their tire strategies.
McLaren’s pit stops were strategically timed, with Norris pitting on lap 22 and Piastri following closely behind on lap 23, both of whom recorded respectable gaps behind Verstappen.
Considering their tire strategies, Red Bull planned for one more pit stop than their rivals.
Verstappen received a new set of tires on lap 30, while Piastri regained the lead, maintaining a margin of nearly five seconds over Norris.
As the race progressed, the two McLaren drivers displayed a commanding performance, with Piastri extending his lead and Norris steadily approaching him.
Verstappen’s final pit stop occurred on lap 48, with Norris following just a lap later.
Post-pit stops saw Norris defend against Verstappen’s overtaking attempts.
However, the situation took a sudden turn on lap 55 when a safety car was deployed due to Antonelli's car failure, prompting a strategic reshuffling in the top echelon.
All front-runners opted for soft tires, but Verstappen found himself without the same options, holding only hard tires which compromised his position.
He lost ground to Leclerc and ultimately to Russell.
In a miscalculated overtaking maneuver, Verstappen collided slightly with Russell, resulting in a ten-second penalty that caused him to plummet to tenth place.
Consequently, Piastri cruised to victory, marking his seventh career win, with Norris finishing in second place and Leclerc rounding out the podium in third.
The final standings saw the McLaren team securing a remarkable one-two finish, further solidifying their place in the championship.
The race statistics reflect Piastri’s finishing time of 1:32:57.375, with Norris trailing by 2.471 seconds.
Following them were Leclerc (10.455 seconds behind), Russell (11.359 seconds), and Nico Hülkenberg (Sauber) rounding out the top five.
Post-race, the championship standings revealed Piastri leading with 186 points, followed closely by Norris with 176.
Verstappen fell to third with 137 points, while Russell and Leclerc stand at 111 and 94 points respectively.
The Constructors’ Championship features McLaren in first place with 362 points, followed by Ferrari and
Mercedes.
The next race of the season will take place in Canada in two weeks.
