Lack of Air Conditioning in Szentes Hospital Raises Concerns During Heatwave

Patients endure extreme temperatures in a hospital ward lacking climate control as summer heat intensifies.
Patients in the chronic internal medicine ward at the Dr. Bugyi István Hospital in Szentes are facing unbearable heat as temperatures reportedly exceed 40 degrees Celsius.

Family members of the patients have criticized the conditions, highlighting that individuals who are bedridden and unable to care for themselves are left in rooms without air conditioning, which often feels hotter due to large windows that allow heat to accumulate throughout the day.

Local representatives have expressed concerns regarding the situation, with Varga Ferenc, a member of the opposition Democratic Coalition, stating that such harsh conditions have persisted for years during the summer months.

He emphasized that the health ministry’s performance has drawn criticism, particularly regarding infrastructure upgrades and heat management in hospitals.

Varga personally purchased a fan for his relative in the ward, indicating the desperation felt by families regarding the patient's comfort and wellbeing.

Despite pleas for intervention, the hospital’s maintaining body, the University of Szeged, has not publicly responded to inquiries about the situation or potential solutions.

The Health Ministry, however, has claimed that there is no 'air conditioning crisis' within hospitals, asserting that all stakeholders are aware of their responsibilities in addressing such issues.

During the ongoing heatwave, the Ministry reported that over 4 billion forints have been allocated for hospital climate solutions within the past year.

Requested information about the specific number of hospital wards lacking air conditioning, as well as any postponed surgeries due to heat-related concerns, has yet to be disclosed.

The poor conditions in hospitals, including extreme temperatures in patient areas, have become a significant political topic, especially in light of last summer's discussions.

One such initiative involved local representative Péter Magyar measuring temperatures in various hospitals, where reports indicated temperatures as high as 38.4 degrees Celsius.

Varga Ferenc has called for immediate action from both the relevant authorities and the Health Ministry to install air conditioning in affected wards, arguing that patients deserve better treatment conditions, especially during extreme weather.

The issue reflects broader systemic challenges in health care infrastructure in Hungary, particularly related to patient comfort and safety during periods of intense heat.
