Italy's Prime Minister Meloni to Visit Migrant Centers in Albania
Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni will visit Albania on Wednesday to inspect migrant centers managed by Italy, just days before the European elections on June 6-9, 2024. Under a controversial agreement signed in November 2023, Albania has agreed to receive asylum seekers from Italy, process their registrations at a center on the Adriatic Sea, and house them at another inland facility. The centers can hold up to three thousand asylum seekers, with operational costs estimated at seven hundred to eight hundred million dollars over five years.

Under a controversial agreement signed in November 2023, Albania has agreed to receive asylum seekers from Italy, process their registrations at a center on the Adriatic Sea, and house them at another inland facility.
The Italian cultural week in Albania coincides with her visit.
Meloni's government hopes the project, though still under construction, will affirm their stance on illegal migration.
Albania will cover the operational and security costs of these centers, which can hold up to 3,000 asylum seekers, at an estimated expenditure of 700-800 million dollars over five years.
The agreement has faced criticism from organizations like the International Rescue Committee and Amnesty International, labeling it as 'dehumanizing' and 'illegal.'
