Investigation Launched Against Budapest Councillor Kinga Kollár

The capital's equity procedure initiated against Kollár following remarks on EU funding.
An investigation into a potential conflict of interest has been initiated against Budapest Councillor Kinga Kollár. Kristóf Gulyás Gergely, a city representative, announced on social media that Mayor Gergely Karácsony officially forwarded the request for investigation to the relevant committee at 20:45 on Monday evening.

In his post, Gulyás stated, "This is no longer a matter of opinion.

It is a legal procedure." He further commented on the implications of Kollár's remarks regarding European Union funding, stating that her actions prioritise her political career over the interests of the people of Budapest, whom she is supposed to represent.

He emphasized that local government representatives must not engage in activities that could undermine public trust necessary for fulfilling their duties, asserting that such actions warrant immediate conflict of interest investigations.

He indicated that this process is currently underway and that they will ensure accountability for Kollár's statements.

The City Council of Budapest is expected to make a decision on the matter in its upcoming session.

Kollár, a Member of the European Parliament for the Tisza Party, has recently faced backlash for her remarks concerning EU funding.

During a meeting of the Budget Control Committee, she referred to the rule of law procedure and withholding EU funds as "very effective." This statement, made in English, was reportedly not her first on the topic.

In her address, she detailed the ramifications for Hungary arising from the withholding of EU funds, which she claimed had amounted to approximately €21 billion, with €1 billion already permanently lost.

Kollár asserted that the rule of law process has had "very serious effects" on the Hungarian state, hampering its ability to invest in public services, support the economy, and provide additional social services to its citizens.

She noted, "As a Hungarian, I must say that [the rule of law procedure] has proven to be very effective, as approximately €21 billion has been suspended, and out of that, one billion has already been lost for the Hungarians."

Additionally, she stated that the deteriorating living conditions of Hungarians had inadvertently strengthened the opposition, expressing optimism regarding the upcoming elections in 2026.

Kollár's comments have ignited significant controversy.

Péter Magyar, president of the Tisza Party, responded that all party representatives always prioritize the interests of the Hungarian people in their decisions.

According to a survey conducted by the Nézőpont Institute, two-thirds of Hungarians disagree with Kollár's statements.

Furthermore, a review involving 21 research centers has begun in response to her remarks.

In terms of her financial standing, Kollár reportedly possesses a net worth of nearly HUF 700 million, holding stakes in multiple properties, including residential houses in Gödöllő, Esztergom, and Budapest, as well as a vacation property in Madeira, Portugal.

Her monthly remuneration as a Brussels representative is approximately €16,869, exceeding HUF 6.8 million.
