Recent reports suggest the iconic rainbow Storstomma tote bag may be discontinued amidst changing political climates.
Recent online posts have surfaced indicating that IKEA may be discontinuing its rainbow-colored Storstomma shopping bag.
A post by documentarian Fruzsina Skrabski highlighted a photograph showing the tote with a label stating, "Last opportunity to purchase.
This product is no longer being manufactured." While the specific date and location of the photograph remain unclear, reports suggest that such a label was spotted at an IKEA store in Budaörs last week.
However, the IKEA website does not currently reflect any indication of removing products that promote diversity.
Skrabski's post has garnered attention from media outlets aligned with the ruling Fidesz party, with several publications suggesting that IKEA is distancing itself from Pride-related initiatives.
Notably, one outlet connected this potential move to recent political events, citing the election of
Donald Trump and proposed legislation in Hungary aimed at restricting Pride activities, stating that such developments have impacted the multinational company’s stance on LGBTQ+ products.
Inquiries were made to IKEA regarding the potential discontinuation of the rainbow tote bag and the reasons behind such a decision.
As of now, there has been no response from the company.
Following the passage of legislation that restricts the right to assembly, it was noted that IKEA participated in Pride parades in both 2023 and 2024, and has previously launched campaigns promoting acceptance under the slogan "Love Begins at Home." In 2020, the company rebranded its signature blue shopping bags to feature rainbow colors in support of LGBTQ+ initiatives, donating proceeds from sales to programs supporting individuals in crisis situations within the LGBTQ+ community.
When previously asked about the potential impact of the proposed ban on Pride events, IKEA representatives stated they were evaluating how the legislative changes would affect the upcoming Pride parade planned for June.
Eva Malá Beluská, the People & Culture leader for IKEA’s operations in Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary, emphasized the company’s commitment to its values, stating that IKEA aims to create a safe and respectful environment for all individuals to express their identities irrespective of sexual orientation.
She reinforced IKEA’s continued support for diversity and inclusion, ensuring equal opportunities and benefits for all employees in the relevant markets.
The Hungarian Parliament, dominated by the Fidesz party, enacted amendments to assembly laws on March 18, effectively prohibiting gatherings that promote homosexuality.
Under the new legislation, organizers and participants of such assemblies may face fines of up to 200,000 HUF.
This bill was introduced on the morning of March 17 and was rapidly passed through Parliament in a single day.
The urgency surrounding the approval of this law was marked by the voting taking place before a foundational constitutional amendment, which asserts that children have the right to protection and care necessary for their proper physical, mental, and moral development, potentially restricting longstanding rights to assembly and freedom of expression.
