The furniture giant reaffirms its commitment to LGBTQ+ rights despite recent controversies and rumors regarding its rainbow-branded merchandise.
Recent reports regarding IKEA's potential withdrawal from its support of the LGBTQ+ community have sparked widespread discussion.
This speculation originated from a
Facebook post by Fruzsina Skrabski, a documentary filmmaker and former advisor to the former President Katalin Novák, claiming that the company might discontinue its rainbow-branded products.
The post referenced the sighting of a message on a shopping bag stating it was the 'last chance to purchase' and that 'this product is no longer being manufactured.'
Several news outlets subsequently reported that IKEA was removing its rainbow items and retreating from its support for Pride.
However, the company later clarified that the specific signage was displayed only at its store in Budaörs, while the other two stores in Budapest did not have such notices.
The Storstomma bags are indeed in limited supply in Hungary, yet IKEA confirmed plans to continue selling the product in the upcoming year.
IKEA has been an outspoken supporter of the LGBTQ+ community for many years.
The company participated in Pride parades in both 2023 and 2024 and launched its campaign titled 'Love Begins at Home.' The rainbow shopping bags have been in circulation since 2020, with proceeds from their sales allocated to programs and organizations that support LGBTQ+ individuals in crisis.
The context surrounding these developments is particularly sensitive, following the passage of a law on March 18 by Hungary’s Fidesz-majority Parliament that restricts the right to assembly, a move widely interpreted as targeting Pride events.
Since this legislative change, there have been significant protests, including road blockades, and opposition members demonstrated against the proposal using smoke flares in Parliament.
Previously, the Szikra Movement vehemently criticized multinational corporations for their support of LGBTQ+ rights.
However, amid the current legislative actions that threaten Pride events, there has been a noticeable silence from these companies.
The movement has initiated a campaign encouraging companies to unequivocally express their stance or face the consequences of their silence.
Following this, inquiries were made to various corporations, yet many did not respond.
