Hungary Signs New Strategic Partnership with Audi to Boost Automotive Sector

The agreement aims to bolster investments in Győr, marking a significant milestone in Hungary’s automotive industry.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced a new strategic cooperation agreement with Audi, a key player in Hungary's automotive sector, on Friday in Győr, where the one-millionth Q3 model has recently rolled off the production line.

This agreement is intended to enhance Hungary's economic strength as it transitions to new dimensions of industry.

Szijjártó stated that the primary objective of the partnership is to encourage the German automotive manufacturer to make further investments in Győr. He emphasized the importance of collaboration in successfully navigating the new era of the automotive industry, dominated by electromobility.

He remarked, "We have agreed that here in Győr, you will play a leading role in the processes of industrial modernization, whether it be through robotization, automation, or digitalization."

The minister highlighted the significance of the one-millionth Q3 model as an indicator of Audi’s readiness to remain competitive in the future automotive landscape.

He noted that despite recent global economic challenges, the automotive sector continues to serve as a backbone of the global economy, undergoing a technological revolution.

Szijjártó pointed out that economic success is increasingly linked to advancements in the automotive industry, which Hungary aims to position itself as a leader within the European automotive sector and as a global frontrunner in the technological revolution of the automotive industry.

He mentioned the substantial growth of Hungary's automotive production value, which has quadrupled over the last fifteen years, reaching 13 trillion HUF last year and employing over 160,000 individuals.

With the presence of all three major German premium automotive brands set to become a reality, the minister highlighted that Hungary is poised to be among the top three countries globally where all three operate manufacturing plants, focusing on their electromobility strategies.

He also noted that the strong German presence has fostered a significant economic footprint from China as well.

Over the past decade, the government has supported 244 large-scale automotive investments, encompassing a total value of 6.1 trillion HUF and resulting in the creation of 61,000 new jobs.

Szijjártó remarked that as these investments come online, Hungary would seamlessly enter the elite echelons of the global automotive sector, with prospects to produce over one million vehicles and two million engines, alongside having the second-largest capacity for electric battery production worldwide.

Finally, he acknowledged Audi’s contribution to this success, citing that, during its three decades in Győr, the company has invested 5.2 trillion HUF in the city, currently employing over 12,000 individuals and consistently approaching production targets in both motor and vehicle manufacturing, while operating carbon-neutrally and significantly contributing to Hungary's export performance.
