CATL Secures $4.6 Billion from Hong Kong IPO for Debrecen Factory Expansion

CATL Secures $4.6 Billion from Hong Kong IPO for Debrecen Factory Expansion

Leading battery manufacturer plans to finance significant expansion projects in Hungary following successful stock offerings.
Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), the world's largest battery manufacturer, has raised $4.6 billion through a stock offering on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, marking the largest initial public offering (IPO) of 2023 to date.

The shares saw a rise of 16% during the trading session, with an increase of more than 1% also noted on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.

CATL is set to allocate approximately 90% of the funds raised from this IPO towards the construction of its factory in Debrecen, Hungary.

Analysts from the financial sector have indicated that the strong performance of CATL’s stock reflects significant investor anticipation regarding the demand for CATL's products.

Construction of the factory is scheduled to commence pilot production this autumn, followed by full-scale production and subsequent phases of development.

The sequencing of these phases is perceived as potentially problematic for the Hungarian government, as CATL’s contributions to the Hungarian GDP may not sufficiently bolster economic figures prior to the upcoming elections.

The second phase of the Debrecen facility is confirmed to be financed by the proceeds from the IPO.

The factory is expected to supply batteries to major automotive manufacturers including Volkswagen, BMW, and Stellantis.

This project is especially relevant in the context of escalating trade tensions between the United States and China, as it may lead to an increased focus on the European market by Chinese firms, anticipating a surge in demand.

The factory, which is being developed with approximately 320 billion HUF in governmental support, aims to achieve an annual production capacity of 100 gigawatt-hours by the year 2030. Updates on the current progress and expected timelines of the construction have been released separately.

In a related development, discussions are advancing regarding the resolution of the Slovak-Hungarian hydroelectric situation at the Bős-Nagymaros project.

Deputy Minister of Energy Gábor Czepek has indicated that a preliminary agreement for increased electricity and water imports from Slovakia is anticipated to emerge by the end of June.

Czepek has emphasized that key objectives remain unchanged, focusing on the enhancement of electricity imports and water supply to Hungary.

He stated that the current negotiations do not prioritize green ideologies but rather aim to improve energy security and environmental goals simultaneously.

The construction of the Nagymaros facility has been suspended for 36 years, and a mutually acceptable solution regarding issues such as the division of the Danube’s water flow and energy considerations is still pending.

The political contexts of both Hungary and Slovakia share many similarities, highlighting their interdependence and common interests.
