Hungary Offers Compensation to Farmers for Bird Flu Precautions

Government initiative aims to mitigate the economic impact of avian influenza by supporting farmers who agree to phase out ducks and geese.
Hungary's poultry sector is facing significant financial strain due to recurring outbreaks of avian influenza, a viral disease that not only results in the deaths of both domestic and wild birds but also poses severe economic risks.

Over the past three years, the Hungarian government has incurred annual compensation expenses totaling 15 billion forints for affected farmers.

In light of this escalating financial burden on the state budget, the government is implementing measures to prevent the spread of avian influenza and eradicate the disease efficiently.

Avian influenza is known to cause high mortality rates among bird populations, leading to substantial economic loss for poultry producers.

According to the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih), there are currently no new outbreaks reported; however, efforts to combat avian influenza continue to exert pressure on governmental resources.

As part of this strategy, a decision has been made to offer financial support to farmers who commit to not raising ducks or geese.

The regulation, published in the Hungarian Gazette, stipulates that farmers who voluntarily terminate their waterfowl operations and refrain from restocking until December 31, 2028, will be eligible for government support.

This initiative targets poultry producers in select areas of Bács-Kiskun, Békés, and Csongrád counties, with a total funding pool of 2.05 billion forints.

Applications for this support can be submitted starting July 1.

The decree indicates that controlling the quantity of waterfowl is a crucial step towards reducing the risk of avian influenza outbreaks.

It aims to incentivize farmers on previously affected sites to rationalize their production capacities as a preventive measure.

Despite these initiatives, avian influenza presents challenges that are difficult to circumvent even with precautionary measures.

The government emphasizes the necessity of adhering to biosecurity practices and urges farmers to report any unusual health issues in their flocks or dead birds found in the vicinity to veterinarians or local district offices promptly.

The enclosed regulations highlight the importance of proactive measures to mitigate the risks associated with the disease.
