Hungary Eases Conditions for Home Energy Efficiency Renovation Program

Government expands eligibility and reduces paperwork for families applying for home energy modernization grants and loans.
The Hungarian Ministry of Energy has announced the relaunch of its home energy efficiency renovation program with simplified conditions.

As of January 20, more households will be eligible to apply for grants up to 6 million forints, alongside reduced administrative requirements.

This initiative, available since last summer, aims to encourage energy-saving modernizations in family homes.

Key changes include the extension of eligibility to homes built before 2007, broadening the pool of potential participants by an estimated 300,000 families.

The application process will be streamlined, eliminating the need for several documents, including payment schedules, final construction project statements, general income proof, declarations about other loans, utility bills, and product descriptions.

This aims to make the program more accessible, particularly for residents of smaller settlements.

The program's total budget is set at 73 billion forints, with approximately 67 billion allocated for rural developments and around 6 billion for urban projects.

In the previous year, over 46,000 inquiries were made about the initiative, resulting in more than 12,000 energy certifications being issued.

By 2024, nearly 4,900 grant applications were submitted, totaling 27.2 billion forints in requested funds.

Projections suggest that this round of the program could support up to 15,000 family investments.

Applicants must aim for at least a 30% reduction in energy consumption, achievable through measures like external insulation, window replacement, or heating and hot water system upgrades.

However, due to European Union restrictions, subsidies for installing or replacing gas boilers are no longer available.

A significant update to the program is the extension of the original completion deadline from the end of 1990 to the end of 2006, allowing more homes to qualify for assistance.

The funding package comprises up to 3 million forints in non-repayable grants and 3 million in interest-free loans, with proportional adjustments for smaller requests.

The complete calls for the energy renovation program are accessible on the official tender website for both rural and urban locations.

Loan applications can be submitted from January 20, 2025, until budget exhaustion, but no later than March 2027, at MFB Pont Plusz branches.

Government statements emphasize the program’s potential to significantly reduce household energy consumption, enabling greater participation in energy cost reduction benefits.

By lowering energy use, the initiative aims to enhance Hungary’s energy independence and security while contributing to environmental sustainability.

The renovation of homes is also expected to spur growth in the construction sector and support the broader national economy.

Launched in early 2025 as part of an economic action plan, the rural home renovation program complements this initiative, providing opportunities for comprehensive family home energy and aesthetic upgrades.
