With Romania's recent entry into the Schengen Zone, transportation services are launching to facilitate shopping trips for Hungarians.
Romania officially became a full member of the Schengen Area on January 1, 2025, leading to the removal of border checks at internal land borders.
This development has revitalized shopping tourism in Romania, particularly among Hungarian citizens.
According to a report by Világgazdaság, announcements have appeared in closed
Facebook groups regarding the launch of transport services from the eastern regions of Romania to facilitate shopping trips for Hungarians.
On February 6, a dedicated
Facebook group for interested participants was created, which had already garnered over 700 members by the time of the report's publication.
Initially, the service was set to operate weekend trips, specifically on Saturdays and Sundays.
However, due to the high level of interest, the introduction of weekday services is not ruled out.
The transportation service will commence with nine-seat minibuses, departing from cities such as Debrecen and Nyíregyháza.
In addition to food shopping, arrangements for purchasing technical goods and construction materials via trucks are also being organized.
Participants in the
Facebook group are promised weekly updates on the current promotional advertisements from Romanian stores to ensure that members are aware of price variations and special offers.
For instance, one example cited in the report indicates that a kilogram of sugar at Kaufland in Romania might be approximately 100 Hungarian forints cheaper compared to prices in Hungary.
