Hungarians Reassess Support for Viktor Orbán's Government After 15 Years in Power

A recent survey reveals a significant shift in public opinion regarding the performance of Viktor Orbán's administration, suggesting a loss of support among Hungarian citizens.
On April 25, 2010, supporters of the Fidesz-KDNP party celebrated the election victory in Budapest's Vörösmarty Square, heralding the start of Viktor Orbán's government and the establishment of what he termed the 'National Cooperation System'.

At the time, Orbán emphasized creating a political system designed to empower citizens and to prioritize the interests of 'Hungarian people above all'.

However, fifteen years later, recent public sentiment indicates that a majority of Hungarians believe that Orbán’s administration has hindered rather than helped the country’s development.

According to a recent survey conducted by Policy Solutions, about two-thirds of the population feels that the government's policies predominantly benefit the wealthy.

The respondents cited pressing issues such as the state of healthcare, surging cost of living, and corruption as significant concerns, while the government's achievements were primarily identified as the reinstatement of the 13th month pension, family support programs, and utility price reductions.

This assessment is supported by findings from a representative survey conducted by Závecz Research between March 16 and March 25, 2025, targeting a diverse demographic to accurately reflect the opinions of Hungary's adult population.

Notably, 35% of respondents identified the healthcare situation as the most substantial problem, closely followed by inflation and corruption, which were cited by 27% and 26%, respectively.

While the survey results reflected a degree of consensus on the perceived shortcomings of the past fifteen years, the perspectives diverged significantly between supporters of the ruling Fidesz party and those of opposition factions.

Fidesz voters reported a markedly positive view of Orbán’s governance, whereas those affiliated with the Tisza Party showed overwhelming disapproval.

The survey findings also suggest a stark generational divide; younger voters, especially those aged 18-25, predominantly view Orbán's reign negatively, while older voters tend to express more favorable opinions.

Among Fidesz supporters, 88% perceive the administration positively, in contrast to only 1% of Tisza Party supporters who believe the same.

Despite ongoing governmental claims of progress, more than 60% of respondents believe that the financial status of Hungarians has worsened over the past 15 years.

The general sentiment is that personal connections to the government are necessary for social advancement, a view shared by 65% of the populace.

In assessing potential government replacements, the survey suggested that a substantial segment of the population, particularly opposition supporters, view Magyar Péter of the Tisza Party as a more competent alternative to Orbán in numerous policy areas, including healthcare, education, and combating corruption.

Given these perspectives, only 44% of the survey participants believe it is feasible to replace the current administration through democratic elections, with a notable fraction (39%) doubting such an outcome.

As Hungary approaches the next parliamentary elections, the results from the Policy Solutions survey reveal a complex landscape of political sentiment, where traditional loyalties are being challenged by shifting public priorities and concerns.
