Gábor Bányai reportedly suffered health issues after opposition members disrupted a vote by deploying smoke flares, leading to medical attention.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Hungarian Parliament passed amendments related to the protection of children in connection with Act LV of 2018 on the right to assembly.
The vote received 136 affirmative votes and concluded with changes that would ban the holding of Pride events in the future.
During the voting process, opposition members from the Momentum party attempted to disrupt proceedings with what has been described as scandalous behavior by raising smoke flares in the closed chamber.
This disruption resulted in serious consequences; Gábor Bányai, a member of the ruling Fidesz party, required medical attention after being affected by the toxic smoke.
Bányai, who is a
COVID-19 survivor, informed that he has a compromised trachea that is sensitive to smoke.
In a statement to media, Bányai reassured the public of his recovery, saying, "I am fine! My trachea was injured; it does not tolerate smoke." He later expressed his gratitude on social media for the concern he received, noting, "The smoke is not good for me, especially the fumes from three or four smoke flares from a distance of five meters, particularly in a closed space.
My trachea is already narrower and weaker due to the intubation during
COVID.
But there is no need to worry about me; I am getting better.
It is more concerning how aggressive the left is capable of being in Parliament."
Bányai contracted the
coronavirus in 2021, which led to a critical state where he required intubation and treatment with an artificial lung.
He described his battle with the illness, stating, "Yes, I definitely felt that I could not overcome this disease.
I have had many lung problems since childhood and have been ill often." He spent 85 days in a coma during which his heart stopped twice, and he was resuscitated before being placed on an artificial lung for 68 days.
In response to the smoke incident, fellow Fidesz politicians expressed their concern and well wishes for Bányai's health.
Máté Kocsis, a prominent Fidesz figure, voiced his outrage on social media, questioning the safety and actions of the opposition following the disruption.
