Hungarian Government to Establish Foundation for Scientific Talent and Research

Hungarian Government to Establish Foundation for Scientific Talent and Research

The initiative, led by Nobel laureate Ferenc Krausz, aims to attract researchers back to Hungary and foster scientific innovation.
The Hungarian government is set to establish a new foundation intended to bolster scientific research and innovation in the country.

The foundation, named the Élvonal Csúcskutatási és Tehetséggondozó Alapítvány, will be led by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Ferenc Krausz.

The initiative aims to create a so-called 'golden team' of Hungarian science and to attract renowned researchers both from within Hungary and abroad.

The establishment of the foundation is outlined in a draft law, which is expected to be voted on in Parliament.

If approved, it will be placed under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Innovation.

The foundation is conceptualized as an asset management organization, similar to ones previously established, which seeks to offer economic support to aid scientific endeavors.

Objectives of the foundation include attracting both emerging and world-renowned researchers to Hungary and facilitating the commercialization of scientific results produced at knowledge centers surrounding these scientists, particularly through Hungarian small enterprises.

Additionally, the foundation aims to identify and support talent in the fields of mathematics, physics, and information technology from the end of primary education onwards.

Balázs Hankó, the Minister for Culture and Innovation, stated that the foundation's aim is to build Hungary's 'golden team' in science while ensuring a robust pipeline of future talent.

He also noted that a key goal is to position Hungary among the ten most innovative countries in Europe by 2030. The plans involve relocating 25 research teams to Hungary, alongside establishing 50 new groups comprising promising young talents.

Krausz will serve as the 'team captain,' responsible for overseeing the foundation and for selecting the researchers who will participate in the program while also contributing to talent development.

The press has sought clarification on the funding and financial structure of the foundation, including concerns over the need for a headquarters and the choice of a public benefit foundation model for its establishment.

However, no specific responses have been provided regarding these inquiries.

Pending parliamentary approval, the establishment of the Élvonal Alapítvány is anticipated to take place by the summer of this year.
