The Hungarian Parliament, where Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party holds a majority, has authorized another 180-day extension of wartime emergency powers for the government.
This move aims to ensure quick and effective national responses to ongoing crises.
Published in the Magyar Közlöny on Thursday, the decree extends emergency measures until May 18, 2025, in response to the conflict and humanitarian emergency in Ukraine and their impact on Hungary.
Initially declared during the 2022 campaign, the wartime emergency was enabled by the tenth amendment to the Fundamental Law.
Despite the extension, Finance Minister Mihály Varga has proposed a 'peace budget' to the National Assembly, referencing the upcoming U.S. presidential election.
Bolstered by the belief that
Donald Trump's victory would bring peace closer, Orbán supported this budget.
Additionally, the government has extended the state of emergency caused by mass migration until March 7, 2025, which was first declared in 2015, now marking a decade of special legal order in Hungary.
