How One Vogue Staffer Styles 5 Days of Denim

As we continue to navigate these ever-changing times, in season two of What I Wore This Week, one Vogue editor shares their outfits-both on Zoom and IRL-from the previous week.

I’m definitely the more is more type. Whether I’m going for something funky or something cozy, being structured or grungy, wild western or bohemian, my style is mood-based and constantly evolving. Let’s put it this way: the second I get invited to a themed party, I’m already having so much fun in my head thinking about what to put together.

Pre-pandemic times, dressing for the office was one of many ways I utilized self-expression through fashion. I pushed myself to dress more out of my comfort zone and pay attention to the variety of pieces in my wardrobe.

But I’m not going to lie, at the beginning of the pandemic, I rolled out of my bed to my computer and back. I lived (quite literally) in PJ’s and sweatsuits. For a few months, it was nice to take it easy and not get so dressed up all the time. However, it was only a matter of time until I started to feel as if a bit of my personality was missing. As lockdown restrictions have lifted and an attempt to go back to “normalcy” is intact, I’ve started to slowly progress in embracing more of my personal style into my work day wardrobe. I even curl my hair now! Although, I’m not ready just yet to jump back into a full pant-suit or silk dress with heels, I think I’ve identified the stable piece in my wardrobe-denim.

I never realized how much denim I have accumulated over the years. It started out with the black skinny jean, which was considered at the time to be the safest piece of denim in my wardrobe. I wore them with just about everything. Slowly, as denim has become more accepted in the workplace, I’ve begun experimenting with different fits and unique ways to style them. Yes, wearing jeans all day at home is a controversial choice, but trust me when I say there are plenty of times that are both comfortable and chic.

Below are five ways I take different WFH denim styles to the next level.

Monday

The Boyfriend Jean

Mondays are one of my busiest days at work, and therefore I like to keep it pretty comfortable and simple. For a day spent on the computer and in Zoom meetings, the boyfriend jean is the perfect baggy fit. Since I’m on video calls, I want to keep my look clean and professional. Pairing this structured, checked blazer over a black T-shirt is the ideal balance of tailored meets cozy. Although it’s just me in my “home office” I’ll spray a little Lil Fleur, my signature scent from Byredo. My feet most of the time are tucked away in fuzzy slippers, but I’ll throw on these black cowboy boots if I need to run out in between.

Tuesday

The Vintage Flare Jean

Whether in the office or working from home, I always make time to run out, get a few steps in, and grab a coffee. Since I’m heading outdoors, I like to get a bit more playful with my style waist down. I love the fit of these vintage jeans, which flare slightly around the knee. The effect elongates my legs, which I find extremely flattering for a denim style. I’ve decided to replace my jacket for an oversized knit to keep me at just the perfect fall warmth. As a big accessorize-er, I pay a lot of attention to earrings and rings. These Laura Lombardi spiral hoops are a perfect match to my Mejuri staples, namely the Croissant Dôme Ring and Single Mini Hoops. To top off my “grab-a-coffee” look, I’ve added a beige cowboy hat. Inspired by a trip to Colorado, I’ve started working a bit of western flair into my style.

Wednesday

The Grey Jean

During the pandemic, I’ve been committing to taking a daily walk during my work day. This allows twenty to thirty minutes for myself to disconnect, get some fresh air and move my body around. And just maybe, it’s also an excuse to put on a cute outfit.

The fit of these grey jeans is in-between skinny and straight, with denim more on the stretchier side - perfect for a long stroll. I’m definitely not a fan of puffy coats, so when the weather starts to cool down, this leather trench is my go-to. It’s perfect paired over a thick knit. For comfort without sacrificing style, the lug-sole boot is the perfect alternative to a sneaker.

Thursday

The 70’s Jean

My personal style has always been pretty eclectic. I’m all for mixing and matching things you would normally never think go together. These ’70s jeans add some serious flare to my outfit (pun intended). To contrast with the black, I add pops of color by pairing a deep coral corduroy blazer over a thick burnt-orange knit. To take the look even further, I wear a dark green slouchy cap with a vintage jeweled chain belt. One of my best friends recently started a small brand of hand-crafted fine jewelry and her aesthetic is right up my alley. Pictured here, I wear an assortment of her gold-tone rings and earrings.

Friday

The Printed Jean

It’s finally the weekend and I’m ready to take my look from day to night–even though I’m not really going out like I did pre-COVID. I like to make my Friday look fun, serving double-duty as something I’d wear “in office” and while out and about. I recently purchased these newspaper printed jeans, they’re already a fun addition to the denim collection of my wardrobe. They remind me of the infamous Christian Dior newspaper dress worn by Carrie Bradshaw in an episode of Sex & The City. As a huge SATC fan, I knew I immediately needed these. Ready to go, I layer this vintage patent leather red coat—a must for a chilly night out of the house. These lace-up patent booties are probably the highest heel I’ve worn in seven months but they’re totally worth it to complete the look.
