House Fire in Bucsa Sparked by Embers from a Stove Claims the Life of an Elderly Woman
Shortly after midnight, emergency services were alerted to a fire that had broken out in a dilapidated house in Bucsa, in Békés County, as reported by the disaster prevention authorities.
Firefighters rushed to the scene on Zrínyi Street with three vehicles.
A 45 square meter adobe house was ablaze with multiple rooms and roof structure on fire. To extinguish the flames, firefighters were forced to partially dismantle the roof, resulting in the collapse of part of the building's ceiling. It took an hour to bring the 20 square meter inferno under control. Tragically, during the response, the first responders discovered the body of the elderly woman who resided in the house.
Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the fire may have been ignited by sparks flying from a stove; however, an investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause.
The disaster prevention authorities emphasized that in Hungary, around seven thousand residential fires occur annually, yet a negligible number of homes are equipped with smoke detectors. In instances where smoke detectors are installed, awareness of a fire's onset is immediate, allowing for quicker intervention and the chance for occupants to evacuate in time. Where smoke detectors were present, no tragic fatalities, injuries, or large-scale fires occurred. For a cost of only a few thousand forints, a smoke detector should be installed in the middle of the ceiling in each room.
