Germany's Border Controls Highlight Increase in Rejected Ukrainian Migrants

New statistics reveal that nearly one in five individuals turned away at Germany's borders are Ukrainians, raising questions on migration policy amidst heightened scrutiny.
BERLIN – Recent data obtained by the German far-left party Die Linke and published by Euractiv indicates that 19.1% of individuals denied entry at Germany's borders since August 2023 are Ukrainian nationals.

This figure positions Ukrainians as the second-largest demographic among those turned away, following Syrians, who account for 19.8% of refusals.

The increase in rejected entries correlates with Germany's heightened border controls imposed in response to rising migration, particularly since the initiation of checks at borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland in October 2023. Previously, these controls had already been in effect at the Austrian border since last September.

Notably, the overall number of individuals denied entry at the border has increased significantly, reaching approximately 45,000 in 2024 (to date) compared to 35,618 the previous year.

The German Interior Ministry attributed the high percentage of rejected Ukrainian migrants to their attempts to relocate from other EU countries, where they have already been granted temporary protection.

The ministry specified that many of these relocations occur without obtaining the required permissions.

The refusal of entry is further complicated by the necessity for additional documentation required by certain EU countries for Ukrainians traveling for tourism within the Schengen area.

In this context, the German government has been engaging in discussions regarding the unemployment benefits provided to Ukrainian refugees.

Ahead of the upcoming elections, the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) has proposed reforms that could alter benefit structures to promote employment among this demographic.

The border rejection issue is central to the ongoing electoral campaign, with critics alleging that the CDU/CSU's proposed policies may violate EU laws concerning asylum seekers.

A spokesperson for the Interior Ministry noted that individuals are frequently turned away due to circumstances beyond their control, such as insufficient documentation.

These developments underscore a broader debate around migration policies in the EU and Germany's role in responding to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and its resultant humanitarian crisis.
