Two local councillors from the ruling Fidesz party step down, leading to a reduction in representation and a need for by-elections.
Two representatives from the ruling Fidesz party in Gárdony, Hungary, have resigned from their positions, prompting the need for by-elections in the city.
The resignations were confirmed by local news reports, attributing the departures to "insurmountable conflicts" between the councillors, Szabóné Schneider Anikó and Czéczei János, and the newly elected mayor, Eötvös Pál Árpád. As reported, the representatives have chosen to prioritize a peaceful family life over ongoing hostilities.
Following the resignations, the number of Fidesz councillors in the 12-member local council has decreased from five to three.
This shift necessitates the scheduling of by-elections to fill the vacant seats.
The Gárdony municipality announced on its official
Facebook page that Szabóné Schneider Anikó's resignation will require a by-election for the city's 8th electoral district, known as Dinnyés. The date for the by-election is expected to be set by the electoral committee within 120 days of the vacancy, likely falling on a Sunday.
Similarly, Czéczei János's resignation triggers a similar process for the city's 4th electoral district.
Gárdony has been under competitive political scrutiny, particularly since it lost to the opposition in the 2022 elections after having been under Fidesz control since 2002. In the recent local elections, Eötvös Pál Árpád defeated incumbent mayor Tóth István, representing the Velencei-tó Informational Society (VITE), by a margin of more than 1,000 votes, signaling a shift in local political power dynamics.
